Mitch's journey took an unexpected turn during an 16-hour open-heart surgery. What was initially thought to be a straightforward procedure turned into a complex battle. Multiple tears in different branches of the aorta required not one, but three bypass surgeries, leaving him in the ICU with his chest agape, awaiting the formation of clots to staunch bleeding from the stitches. The complications persisted; after 24 hours, it was discovered that the stent, initially placed to halt bleeding, inadvertently impeded circulation in his left arm. Another intricate bypass, lasting an additional 6 hours, was performed, culminating in the delicate closure of his chest. Mitch now has a mechanical valve, a massive stent, 4 bypasses, and confronts a formidable road to recovery.
