On March 20, 2021, inside his tent and trapped inside his sleeping bag, my son Jazmyn was burned over 80% of his body in a fire of unknown origins.
With no blood circulation to his legs, to save his life, both legs were amputated above the knee.
Beyond the amputations, he has undergone surgery almost every week with continuous skin grafts, and ongoing efforts to give him as much use of his hands as possible.
The progress made in burn care is phenomenal. With cells harvested from his own body, they are literally growing his own skin in labs for grafting. Jaz’s system is strong and the greatest thing in his favor has been that all of his organs and lungs have continued to work perfectly.
Because of this he has made incredible progress. His body’s ability to tolerate and respond so well has been an inspiration to the family and the teams that care for him.
It takes a special kind of strength and love , that in the midst of his own agony , he can reach beyond that to offer a smile to every single nurse, doctor or family member who comes to his bedside. Each of us who have been by his side through this knows his life, and our own, is irrevocably changed by this tragedy.
Jaz is one of the greatest loves of my life and the most naturally creative human I have ever known. I know with everything I am, beyond this, he has something incredible to give to the world. But the navigation of the world in this new reality is going to require so much.
With the utmost gratitude I ask. Please help us to help him. With specialty prosthetics, electric wheelchair, transport, special living environment. To the smallest degree, every need has changed.
