Jayant Mulay Memorial

Donation protected
This fund is being created to allow our family to respectfully grieve and honor the loss of our beloved Jayant Shankar Mulay, also known as Baba, Abu, Mulay Kaka, Mulay, Jayanta Mama, Janmejay and Jayantrao.

Jayant Shankar Mulay was surrounded by his family when he died in Southern California at his son’s home on May 31, 2022. He is survived by his wife Nilima, sons Subodh and Sujit, daughter in law DeEttra, daughter by love Sona, granddaughters Maya and Anya and many members of a loving extended family.

Jayant Shankar Mulay was born in Mumbai, India on September 17, 1948, to Shankar Mulay and Shantabai Mulay along with his fraternal twin brother Vasant Mulay. What a beautiful surprise! Two healthy baby boys being welcomed into the world. Vasant and Jayant remained close throughout their lives, living close by and sharing the special bond that only twins can truly understand.

Jayant grew up in a home with five children – twin brother Vasant Mulay, brother Vilas Mulay (RIP), sister Suman Harshe, half-sister Pratibha Sapre, and half-brother Vasudev Mulay (RIP).

In 1960, at the age of 12, Jayant’s family moved to Dombivli. Little did he know that across the street there was a young girl who would become his beloved. Jayant and Nilima met as children, mere neighbors, but in time they fell in love. Their love story was not an easy story, as in 1971 in India a "love match" was rare, marriages were arranged by parents and life partners were not determined by love. However, Jayant was a strong man, deeply in love with the quiet, courageous, and beautiful Nilima. He knew she was his destiny and he would continue to fiercely protect her for the rest of his life. Jayant and Nilima were married on November 25, 1971 surrounded by family and friends. Jayant highly regarded all of the people who helped the couple during their early years and supported them in their “love marriage”. Jayant and Nilima celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2021.

Over time, their marriage proved to be strong, pure and filled with the deepest of love. They welcomed their first son, Subodh, in 1973. Then in 1979, they welcomed their second son, Sujit. They raised their boys in Dombvili, at the time a small town close to the train station near Mumbai. Nilima stayed at home tending to the boys, cooking and caring for their home. Jayant took the train into Mumbai to work at the Reserve Bank of India in the Treasury department. The family lived a simple life and were content in what they had. They would occasionally travel to various places.

Jayant took great pride in his work at the Reserve Bank of India until he retired as a Treasurer in 2009. He made lifelong friends in the office and on the daily train rides into Mumbai. When possible, he would proudly bring his wife, sons and eventually daughter-in-law and granddaughters into the office to meet everyone, bragging and telling stories about his family. He loved his career, could move bills in his hand at incredible speed, and loved to tell stories about the evolution of currency in India. One of his greatest joys was walking people through the Reserve Bank of India Museum and explaining his work to others.

In 2017, after his retirement, Jayant, Nilima and their son, Sujit, moved to the country to live in Talegaon. Each day Jayant would walk to the market for milk, vegetables and the local paper.  He would tend to the home alongside Nilima prepping the vegetables for the daily meal, hanging the laundry on the line and caring for their home.  They shared a simple life with their son, Sujit, in a quiet apartment away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai.  Jayant loved his quiet country home, the open space, clean air, and temperate climate.  Jayant, Nilima and Sujit shared five lovely years in their home in Talegaon as Sujit worked, helped drive them to family members back in Mumbai, and provided them with companionship.

Jayant was an avid cricket fan and shared this passion with both of his sons. He was also a huge movies and songs aficionado. He had a keen interest in finance law and community association/society laws. Due to his vast knowledge of these topics, people often sought his advice and expertise on these matters.  It was his joy to mentor and guide those in his community. His philosophy was that if he went through some trouble experiencing/learning something then he would share that knowledge and hopefully it will be a little easier for the next person. His life experiences helped him make hard decisions. He was always curious and willing to try new things. Anytime anyone would ask him – ‘How are you?’ he would reply with his big smile – ‘Super Fine’ but, try as anyone might, he never smiled for pictures.

Jayant and Nilima arrived in Brea, CA on March 28, 2022 on their fifth trip to the United States to visit their son Subodh, his wife DeEttra, and his granddaughters, Maya and Anya.  During this trip he was able to reminisce about family memories with his son, see his granddaughters perform in several musicals, go shopping with this daughter-in-law and enjoy his vacation.  On April 25th, the family went to an Angels Baseball game to hear his oldest granddaughter, Maya, sing the national anthem with her school choir.  He walked the stadium exploring, chatting with the ushers, drinking beer, eating ice cream, shelling peanuts and cheering on the Angels. It was a fantastic night filled with joy, smiles, sports and family.

The next morning, Jayant experienced the first of several blood clots that ultimately became too much for his body to fight. After multiple blood clots and strokes, he passed in Subodh’s home surrounded by family on the evening of May 31st.

One of Jayant’s dreams that he was never able to accomplish was to make a generous donation to the Anandwan center located in a rural part of Maharashtra.  He had the opportunity to visit and make a basic donation on a trip with his wife and sister-in-law in 2016, but always wished he could do more.  To honor his life and legacy, the funds collected through this site will be used to make a donation to that center in Jayant’s honor.

The mission of Anandwan is to provide marginalized people the means and rights to lead dignified lives through self-reliance and restoring a sense of belonging which they had lost due to ill treatment at the hands of society.  The organization focuses on enabling access to better healthcare facilities, quality education and an occupation of their choice.  To learn more about Anandwan please visit this site:
