Jonathan Stevens (Jay) moved from Virginia to California three years ago and wandered in front of our Steelers bar looking for a spot to watch his favorite team. Having just moved into an apartment in Hollywood, he still needed a place to call "home". Lucky for us he chose our group , Steelers Nation West (SNW). As we welcomed Jay into our home, he welcomed us into his life. Over the next three years Jay helped us all become a family.
Jay was a kind soul who cared for everyone...except on Sundays! Game Day he despised anyone playing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but would probably still buy any opposing team's fan a drink (as long as they liked his jokes). Jay's humor and spirit were infectious and he always made sure everyone was included in the party.
Jay would become the official DJ of SNW and this is where he finally had the opportunity to share his talents with us. His passion for the Steelers was equaled only by his love of music. Jay DJ'ed and MC'ed every Steeler gathering we had at The Rusty Mullet. On game days he showed up early and patiently waited until the doors opened to load in and set up his equipment before the first fan even arrived. His patience ensured a proper welcome to Steelers Nation and kept the energy up as we watched our beloved team battle its' foes.
While most of us knew him for his legendary chants many more of us knew him for his friendship, love, generosity and unfettered loyalty. Jay was selfless in everything he did. There are too many stories to recount of Jay being compassionate towards others. He was a man who put others needs before his own, always made time for his friends and even made time for strangers. Jay just wanted to make everyone's life better, if only for a moment.
Sadly that moment ended on February 2nd, 2019 when we lost Jay. His battle with depression and addiction ultimately proved too much for him to overcome. In true Jay fashion he never let anyone know how much he was going through. The man who helped others with all of their burdens never wanted to become a burden to those he loved. We didn't know how much he was hurting and he didn't understand how much we loved him. His depression kept Jay from feeling loved, but we won't let it keep us from loving him.
It is in Jay's compassionate nature that we have set up this account to help give him a proper burial. The money raised will go towards covering transportation for his family to LA, collection of his remains and the funeral costs. If we are able to exceed our goal, the remaining money will be donated to a local Pittsburgh suicide prevention program in Jay's honor. Jay's family did not ask us to do this, but in the spirit of Jay we are going to find a way to make his family's lives a little easier.
Though he has left us , we will continue to honor his legacy of care and compassion. We are asking that you donate whatever you can, no amount is too small and no donation is too generous. Jay would have done it for any of us and we are making sure that we all do it for him.
