Jay Anderson from Spirit Lake, IA is a hard working husband and father of five. Jay is also my brother. He's always there to help. I want to raise money for Jay and his family to help with medical expenses and lost wages. So let me tell you Jay's story.
In April 2018, Jay received a kidney transplant at the University of Iowa Hospital. Because of his transplant, Jay no longer has an immune system. In November, Jay started to run a fever of 103 and higher. Jay and Karri, his wife, traveled back to the hospital in Iowa City. During his 12 day stay in the hospital, Jay received a diagnosis of histoplasmosis. This is a fungal infection in the bloodstream. Jay was released right after Thanksgiving with an oral antibiotic to help continue to fight the infection. He was told that he would be on this med for at least a year. Around Christmas, Jay started to retain fluid, which was a side effect of the medication. Unfortunately during this time, Jay developed an open sore on his big toe. As Jay worked with his doctor to heal the sore, it became infected and the infection moved into his bone. This meant another trip to Iowa City and admission to the hospital. On February 7, Jay had his big toe amputated along with some of his foot. He will be released from the hospital soon, but will be coming home with an IV pump to administer his antibiotics for the next 6 weeks, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Jay has also been told that he will not be able to work for at least 2 months.
