Javonh Garbutt is an eternally happy and energetic 8 year old. He and his twin sister Jazzlyne are the youngest of 6 children in their close-knit family. When Javohn started feeling sick with a headache and low energy his parents, Thomas and Doret, drove him from their home in Southern Belize to the hospital in Belize City. On June 25, Javohn was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Thomas and Doret were shocked, but with the help of family friends they are doing everything possible to get Javohn the medical treatment he needs. They traveled to Denver, CO, where the Children's Hospital Colorado has agreed to treat Javohn at a reduced cost. Even so, the medical bill for his initial surgery is estimated to be over $150k, and the Garbutts do not have medical insurance to cover this cost. The hospital is requiring $153,385 payment upfront, and Javohn has an appointment to see the Dr on Monday July 8, so we're trying to raise $153k as quickly as possible.

For the remaining $27k we are targeting September 1, to cover other related expenses. Thomas (aka "Scully") is a fishing guide and Doret is an elementary school teacher. They are both taking time off of work to care for Javohn and the rest of their family. This time-off and their travel expenses will add to the financial impact of Javohn's treatment.

The Garbutts are an extraordinary family, with an uncommon caring spirit. They contribute so much to their community and make visitors feel like they are part of the family. I hope we can rally around them now, in their moment of need.

Please keep Javohn and the Garbutt’s in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this and thank you in advance for any other support you can offer.

Yesterday we heard from a long-time friend of the Garbutts from Dallas, Tx. He and his family have been fishing with Scully since 2002, watching all the Garbutt kids grow up. When he heard about Javohn, he immediately asked “how can I help?” and then stepped-up with a very generous offer; a $15k matching donation challenge. As I post this update, we have received $107,713 in donations to help cover the cost of Javohn’s surgery. If we can raise another $15k (getting us to $122,713), this friend of the Garbutts will match your generosity with his own $15k donation, paid directly to the hospital. That would put us very close to covering the initial hospital bill, and get us within striking distance of our $180k goal.
This is an incredibly generous offer and a big opportunity to double the impact of your donations. While this donor would like to remain anonymous, I would like to thank him for his support of Javohn and the Garbutts, as I invite all of you to meet the challenge he has posed.
So please spread the word, contribute what you can, and keep Javohn in your prayers while we await the biopsy results (hopeful for later today).
Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support.

Another big “thank you” to all who have supported the Garbutts in their moment of need. Each donation gets us closer to covering the cost of Javohn’s initial surgery and his hospital stay. Today we are nearly halfway to our goal. Of course, the surgery is complete and the hospital bill is now real. Since we don’t have enough to pay it yet, Todd Roebken has extended his generosity and signed a letter guaranteeing payment to the hospital. He will withdraw the funds we’ve raised into his account for payment to the hospital. That also means, the hospital bill is now his responsibility. Todd has demonstrated extraordinary kindness and generosity helping the Garbutts secure a visa for travel to the US, hosting them at his home and making this financial commitment. Let’s maintain the momentum behind this gofundme campaign and show him the support he deserves for everything he’s done to help the Garbutt family.
In the meantime, Javohn is doing his part. He’s up and walking around, getting stronger very day. All of your encouragement and prayers have certainly helped him as he recovers from surgery. And of course we’re all hoping for good news when the biopsy results come back. We’re asking again for all of you to keep Javohn in your thoughts and prayers.

There are no words to express the level of gratitude we want to convey to all of you. Your collective effort to support Javohn and the Garbutts has been amazing. It is immensely uplifting and inspiring to see such generosity and heartfelt support for this family. Thank you for all of your donations, encouragement and prayers. You are making a huge impact. With that in mind, we want to thank you all very much and share an update.
Javohn had surgery on Tuesday, July 9 to remove the tumor. The procedure went well and the MRI on Wednesday showed that the surgeons were able to remove the entire tumor. Javohn’s strength and resilience are on display, and he is recovering well. Initially the medical staff was having trouble getting him to talk after surgery, so they got a picture of Javohn holding a permit, showed it to him and asked “what is that?” So of course, the first word out of Javohn’s mouth after surgery was “permit.” Based on this, and maybe a few other factors grounded in medical science, they moved Javohn from the ICU to a room in the hospital to continue his recovery.
While these are encouraging signs, Javohn still has some numbness and trouble moving his left leg and foot. We’re hoping this is a temporary symptom following his surgery. We are also anxiously awaiting biopsy results, which we are expecting by Tuesday (July 16). All of us are praying the tumor is benign.
In the meantime, we’re continuing the fund raising effort. We’re off to a great start, thanks to all of you. That said, we still have a long way to go, just to cover the cost of the initial surgery. We’re asking for your continued support. Please spread the word, contribute at whatever level you can, offer your encouragement, and keep Javohn in your thoughts and prayers. It all helps.
Thank you again, and I hope to have more good news to share soon.
