Hi everyone!! My name is Jason Cairl.
My life has changed alot over the past 5 years. I should start by letting you know I have Cerabral Palsy and I am wheel chair bound. My life began to change when my mother had become sick. She had cancer and passed away about 2 1/2 years ago. My mother was my care taker. I moved in my twin brother and his wife who now help me with my daily activities. I'm not helpless. I have chosen to not live off of the goverment but to work and contribute to society.
I work full time (30 hours a week) at a school and I have a sweet power chair that helps me keep up with the kids. They move very fast and I have to be on top of my game to keep up with them.
I also have a van that is equiped to take me to and from my job as well as around to do my errends. My Van is aging and they cost alot of money. (More then I can afford) My brother and sister in law help alot. My sister in law works full time and my brother stays home to take care of his son and to help my between my split shifts at work. I can't shower on my own or get dressed for work by myself.
I don't make much money but I recently found out that due to the fact that I make a little and have a retirement account that I'm no longer qualifed to recieve medical assistance. (I don't even make enough to pay for an apartment on my own) The medical assistance helps pay for a wheel chair and they normally cost close to $14,000. I also used to be able to qualify for a program that would help with the cost of a van but once again I make to much for that. The vans, for a decent used one cost $25,000. I just need a little help to be able to afford the things that help me be able to get around. I only am looking for enough money so that I can keep my job. The goverment has decided that if I want to qualify for these programs I have to quit my job and go on social secruity and spend the money I have in my retirement funds. I don't want to give up my independance and I want to hold down my job and continue to work. Having a job gives me purpose and I love working with kids. I think that just because I have decided to work shouldn't mean that I give up my mobility.
I don't like having to ask for help but there comes a time in life where I feel that we need to because of this. I'm asking for a little help.
I'm looking for a hand up not a hand out.
