Jason's Journey - His battle with Sarcoma
Donation protected
Jason was diagnosed with Retroperitoneal Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Cancer in February of 2019. Sarcoma is a very rare (1% of all cancers) with many subtypes, variations and complexities. The tumor that was found was in his abdomen cavity which affected his kidney, spleen, pancreas, colon, aorta and psoas muscle. Jason had an 18 ½ hour surgery in July of 2019 at USC Keck, where they removed his left kidney, spleen, appendix, 70% of his colon, 70% of his pancreas, 30% of his stomach, part of psoas muscle, part of his diaphragm and a 20lb tumor. In between that surgery and today, Jason has had a colostomy reversal surgery, an ileostomy reversal surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments to try and prevent the cancer from coming back. Unfortunately, the chance of the cancer returning in Jason’s lifetime is 100%. Because of the major abdominal surgery, Jason has now developed a pretty large hernia which is extremely painful. Kaiser won’t perform surgery on him because he still has active cancer spots on his psoas muscle. And they just recently learned there is a new tumor in his abdomen. Because of this, it was collectively decided with Dr. Tseng that Jason needs to have surgery at USC Keck once again to repair the hernia as well as remove the active cancer. He knows that this won’t prevent the cancer from returning, but it will give him a clean slate moving forward and will also help relieve the pain of the hernia. Surgery will likely happen at the beginning of June if they can get everything together logistically and Jason can get on the surgery schedule as hoped.
As with previous surgeries, the Pike Family will be fighting Kaiser to pay for this surgery and hope that they will do the right thing and cover the costs. In the meantime, there will be many out-of-pocket costs traveling to USC Keck in Los Angeles, doctor visits, gas, food, lodging and other essentials needed during his hospital stay and recovery following. If you aren’t able to donate, share with your family and friends and please keep the Pike family in your prayers.
THANK YOU for your support, prayers and donations.
