Jasons journey to a double lung transplant

Donation protected
Dear friends and family:
A few weeks ago my 36 year old nephew, Jason Tuckness, was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, which in scientific terms, is a respiratory disease that is characterized by airway obstruction caused by the accumulation of thick, purulent secretions, resulting in recurrent, symptomatic exacerbation's… In short, the parts of his lungs that transfer the oxygen he breaths into his blood stream have been covering in scar tissue, so when he breaths he has trouble keeping his blood oxygen high enough to support his body and organs without the use of Supplemental oxygen, in turn he has been struck down with debilitating shortness of breath and sometimes, when doing less than strenuous activity he has even lost Consciousness and collapsed, he is now on 5 liters of oxygen 24 hours a day, he went from working 7 days a week 10-12 hour days to not being able to walk from his couch to his bathroom without his oxygen and even on 5 liters of oxygen he gets so out of breath he feels as though he may pass out, this all progressed matter of months. The doctors will have to take drastic steps at this point of his disease to keep him alive. According to Jason’s physician he will need a double lung transplant within the next three to five years. It is my understanding that even if Jason is fortunate to receive 2 donor lungs, the surgery is successful, and his body doesn’t reject them, that perhaps his best scenario of life expectancy would be somewhere near the ten year mark. As you can imagine, our family was devastated to hear such news. Jason’s doctor has advised him to discontinue his residential painting business immediately, this was quite a blow to Jadon because he loved painting, and he was extremely good at his craft, unfortunately he can no longer toss on his whites, strap up his boots, and climb ladders, sand drywall, and fire up the sprayer, as a result, Jason and I partnered in purchasing a vehicle for his new Uber career that will allow him the opportunity to continue to support his family. I am proud of my nephew because he is not idly sitting around but wants to continue making a living for his family. Despite the obvious limitations and setbacks he now has to endure as a part of his daily life. when he sets out for the night he brings his backpack filled with the multiple medications he takes 3 times a day, it contains inhalers, albuterol, his extra battery and charger for his portable Oxygen concentrator he is now forced to use whenever he leaves the safety of his home oxygen concentrator, he is very grateful to have. His insurance didn’t cover a portable concentrator only large tanks, so his uncle Edd And Aunt Anita were extremely gracious to purchase one for him, thankfully, because he cannot drive with a tank in the front seat of the car while driving for uber.
He usually starts his night by driving locals to dinner then he takes a break, then he heads to downtown Huntington Beach, the city he resides, usually from around 11-2am, to quote “provide a service by getting locals home safe and helping them avoid a dui or a wreck, and the opportunity of having fun conversation with folks who may have had one too many.”
Jason’s enthusiasm for this venture has me excited, and I am happy to be involved. Our motto comes from a former Navy Seal and motivational speaker by the name of, Richard John “Mack” Machowicz – “Not dead, can’t quit!” Jason knows he is in the battle of his life and has decided as long as he is breathing and has one heart beat left in him he is going to keep fighting because, in his words,” I want to get my children to adulthood, I have plans for my kids and I have to be here to Fulfill them.” This go fund me Champaign is about helping them keep their family in their home, despite my nephews hard nose work ethic there has been occasions where he physically could not get out of bed much less jump in his vehicle with a portable oxygen machine and drive around, he has done a good job so far with the help of friends, family as well as his “comic book community” to keep above water, but once he has his transplant, God willing, he will be incapacitated from major surgery for months. They need all the help we can give them to not only help them weather the current storm but prepare for that great obstacle ahead... major life saving surgery.
Jason and Erin are great parents and have always put the needs of their children first. Erin was known for volunteering as a teachers aid at their children’s school just about every year of their children’s grade school career, and Jason sr has coached Pop Warner Football, and has even been involved in Boy Scouts. However, what impressed me most is I recently learned he is involved in The Adventure Guides (formerly Indian Guides and Indian Princesses) program in Huntington Beach. Evidently it is a program developed by the YMCA to help strengthen family relationships. What?! Dads wanting to hang out with their daughters! Men after my own heart! Where do I sign-up? Seriousness, it is Jason’s hope that he gets to watch his two sons Jordan and Jason Jr. play many more football and baseball games along with having a number of daddy daughter dances with Mckenize. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll get to see him dance with his little girl at her wedding. That would be a special moment for everyone!
Jason has a tough haul ahead of him! He has to have surgery to determine the extent of this terrible disease and hopefully rule out the possibility of cancerous cells. If all goes well, I have been told that he will be in ICU for three days and most likely be coming home in five. Still, Jason will need a few weeks to fully recover.
Your prayer along with any support you feel led to give is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Jeff Tuckness,
Uncle Jeff
