EDIT: It's been a few months. He is now in housing and walking around on his own. His pain level is about a 3 out of 10 while walking, and it's getting better as time goes on.
All that remains is to fix those three broken teeth . . . and they're preeeetty broken.
Once we can get him to a dentist, I'll let you know how these funds helped him get his smile back.
In September my brother Jason Reed was hit by a car, and he's been bedridden up until now. Here is a list from his doctors of all that he endured in the crash:
Open displaced transverse fracture of shaft of right tibia
Tibia/fibula fracture, right, open type I or II, initial encounter
Closed subtrochanteric fracture of right femur, initial encounter
Closed fracture of multiple ribs of right side, initial encounter
Laceration of scalp, initial encounter
Multiple closed fractures of pelvis with disruption of pelvic ring, initial encounter
Multiple closed fractures of pelvis without disruption of pelvic ring, initial encounter
Open fracture of nasal bone, initial encounter
Open fracture of teeth (upper central incisor x2, upper right lateral incisor), initial encounter
Impaired functional mobility, balance, gait, and endurance
I was able to get some of the x-rays, before and after the surgeries. The surgeon who performed these was truly skilled at what she does.
The police report says Jason traveled close to 30 feet after being hit by the car (dragged, rolled, we're unsure). He left a square foot of blood when he was lifted from the ground.
It was nighttime, raining, and the driver claimed he was not at a crosswalk when he was hit. The police are not charging him with a crime, but there are some details of the report that are questionable and don't quite match his injuries. We have acquired a lawyer and will be investigating this further.
He received quality care at UC Irvine. I visited for over a week with my mom, and it looks like he's well on his way to walking again. With help, he is working hard on physical therapy and making progress.
He has since been moved to another hospital (Fountain Valley Regional), which isn't as renowned as UC Irvine --- but the move was required by his insurance. He was then moved to Country Villa Plaza Convalescent Center to finish his physical therapy, which I'll be honest, he hates. His pain medication has been cut down significantly, so it has been a rough time for him.
This is what brings us to this GoFundMe.
Jason was fortunate enough to receive the best care to put him back together, but the bill will be a sight to behold. Numerous surgeries on multiple bones, titanium placed in tibia, femur and pelvis, hospital bed for numerous weeks (and counting), not to mention food, medication, physical therapy and the upcoming reconstructive dental care --- the mind reels.
Speaking of teeth, I saw them and they're in rough shape. Three of his front teeth are missing significant volume, and he has to eat with the sides of his mouth. I have a friend who's in the dental field and gave me a rundown of the likely course of what is needed to get them repaired:
"X-rays. Check for mobility. Sensitivity. Retention. Most likely root canal. Splinting. Crown lengthening. Core build up. Crowns individually or a 3-unit bridge. Worst case scenario --- extraction and implants and later on implant crowns. Will need a serious deep cleaning, scaling root & planning, and then a periodontal maintenance cleaning every 2-3 months for the next few years."
The rough part is, I don't believe he has dental insurance. It's not going to be pretty.
Right now all we have to cover the costs of his recovery are my mom's pockets and the state provided insurance Jason has. We do not yet know what the final bill will be. I've set a goal of $10,000 for now to get things started.
There aren't words to express how hard this has been. My brother had things rough before there ever was a crash, and now it's all become 10x harder for him. All we can do is watch and hope for the best as he heals and regains mobility. We are thankful for whatever you can give.
