Help Jason beat Oesophageal Cancer

Some of you reading this will know our brother and friend Jason Miller. He is married to Sandra, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary last year and have 5 beautiful daughters aged between 11 and 23.

In March 2018, Jason was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer, one of the toughest cancers with a 5 year survival rate of around 5%.

Since then Jason has been incredibly brave! He has fought this cancer with every possible treatment here in Ireland including radiation, chemotherapy and the removal of his oesophagus. We thought he had beaten it for a year, but in November 2020 Jason’s cancer returned and he is now classed as Stage 4 with metastasized tumours in his lungs and stomach.

As friends and family we are just devastated. It's such an emotional rollercoaster. Any cancer diagnosis is terrible, Oesophageal Cancer is especially bad.

Jason has remained incredibly strong, we know that advances in treatment are constantly moving forward and at some stage in the future we hope cancer treatment will outpace the disease.

Jason has explored all available treatment options in Ireland. For another person this might have been the end of the road but not for Jason. Together with his wife Sandra they have researched treatments from around the world. They found an innovative new treatment to “stop his tumors driver mutations” in Germany where he is under the care of Professor Lars Zender, one of Germany’s top oncologists.

Put simply, this treatment is keeping Jason alive. For us we can only imagine what that feels like. He currently attends treatment in Germany on average three weeks in every five. As you can imagine this is a tough physical, financial and emotional journey for everyone but Jason is incredibly positive and so motivated to continue the fight for himself and also to advance treatment options for others who suffer from this disease.

But treatment is really expensive and there is no insurance to cover the cost. To date, Jason and Sandra have used whatever savings they have to fight the disease. The monthly treatment is a significant financial drain on the family.

With Jason’s blessing a number friends and family have got together to create “The Jason Miller Friends Fund”, a fund dedicated to covering the cost of treatment for Jason. Our goal is to get to €250,000 through a series of fundraising activities to provide for two years of care.

Jason has been so brave throughout. He has continued to work as much as possible to provide for his family. His job as ‘super dad and husband’ in a house full of girls is never neglected. He remains unbelievably positive and is so generous with his time helping a number of other cancer patients through their journey.

But at this point he really needs our help. We can not let the treatment stop! Please donate what you can to help Jason and his family and to help advance how we treat this terrible disease.

Cancer can also be isolating; your support with positive messages would also really help keep the positive energy going for Jason, Sandra and the five girls.

There is an old saying “it takes a village to raise a child…”. We feel that “it takes a village to beat cancer”.

Please, please give what you can and share with friends and family. Updates available on the website: www.jasonmillerfriendstrust.com

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
