My name is Jason Huynh and I have recently been selected to represent Canada at the World Juniors Ultimate Championships in Wroclaw, Poland this upcoming August. Canada has a storied juniors program winning gold at the most recent World Championships in 2014 in Italy. As such, I am honoured and privileged to have been considered to compete this year.
I started playing ultimate when I was 11 years old. A friend who had just picked up the sport introduced me when he needed someone to throw with. We began in a small parking lot using a store bought disc and eventually moved on to throwing at a field near our house. As we improved, we eventually began playing in Toronto's Junior Summer League. In the summer after grade 9 I joined High Octane, a juniors development team from Toronto. I was fortunate enough to be invited to compete with Overdrive, which was at the time the top competitive juniors team from Toronto at Nationals. Since then I have played within the Toronto juniors system and have been lucky enough to win two national championships in 2014 and 2015. I enjoy this sport so much because it is a very competitive sport and also has an awesome community where I can meet people my age and share the same passion as I do for the sport.
Competing at the World Junior Ultimate Championship would be a dream come true for me. I love the sport of ultimate not only for its competitiveness but it's overall incredible community. The support I've received from teachers, friends, family, teammates, and experienced players around the Toronto area has pushed me to become not only the player but the person I am today. However, the financial demands of being part of a national team are great. As part of Team Canada I would need to travel to training camps, tournaments, and of course the World Championships themselves. The costs of travel and accommodations are steep and although I intend to work throughout the summer I would not make enough money to cover everything. I am seeking assistance to help cover these costs as well as the costs of tournament fees. Every donation is appreciated and every dollar counts!
There is no greater honour as an athlete than to represent your country on the international level. To travel to Poland and defend Canada's title as World Champions would be an incredible life experience. Thank you for reading and for all of your support!
