Three years ago, my health journey began with a bacterial infection that hospitalized me multiple times. The infection became recurrent and after a procedure at John’s Hopkins, I was found to have Crohns Disease. After my April 2018 diagnosis, I quit smoking, began exercising, started a healthy diet and worked hard in many ways to take control of my disease. By February 2019, I was officially in remission.
Crohns is an autoimmune disease that is chronic, meaning there is no cure. I was knowledgeable to the fact that remission would not be permanent but with a proper treatment plan and healthy lifestyle I could ensure a high quality of life which I have and for that I am blessed.
Recently, times have taken a downward turn and I am in need of help from kind people that know my struggle with health. I lost my job in April and was subsequently denied unemployment. Due to Covid19, I have been unable to appeal my denial or gain contact with anyone at the employment commission to work on my case. After losing my job, I needed to maintain health insurance and retained Cobra, which allows me to keep my old employment plan, but for a high cost.
In the midst of having no income and waiting on a new job to start, still with no certain start date, I became very sick again. I grew an abscess that I mistook for a muscle spasm or sore muscle from running. I finally went to the hospital and after a CT Scan, it was determined to be a rectal abscess that needed immediate surgery. I underwent surgery that evening, went home to recover and within one week was back in the emergency room because the procedure was done improperly. I had to have a second emergency surgery to remove the larger abscess. It was successful, but because of its location, I require another 1-2 surgeries to ensure everything is removed.
The abscess was determined to be caused by a Crohns flare and after consulting with my specialist at Hopkins and my colo-rectal surgeon, it is believed that a more aggressive treatment for my disease must begin. This treatment plan includes biologic infusions which is not only something that is expensive, but something that has terrified me since my diagnosis two years ago.
With all of my medical bills, hospital bills, insurance premiums, and daily living expenses, I also have a home health care company that comes to clean my wound. My wound needs cleaning 14 times a week, but insurance covers three times maximum. Any extra visits are completely out of pocket.
My medical bills continue to pile up, and my parents and family have already done so much for me that I wanted to extend the opportunity to help to the other people in my world. I hope you all understand, I am humbled to ask this favor of anyone, but it would mean the world if you would donate to help with my medical
expenses, as I have no income and have had none for two months. I appreciate the kindness in advance as I know these times are trying for everyone. God bless you all and stay safe.
