January 17th 2019 will forever be remeber as one of the most impactful (pun fully intended) days of my life.  I lost control of out 2017 Kia minivan and wound up going off the road and down a 20 foot embankment. Time seemed to slow as I felt every bump,  stump and branch until I crashed head on into a tree. I remeber the sound of the engine running and tires spinning for what seemed like an eternity. As I realized what happened, my first thought was glad to be alive. I was unable to open my door to get out. I called 911 and turned off the van. As I waited help I called my wife and apologized about the accident (the van was a birthday gift from just 2 short years ago).
An officer arrived and helped me climb out the passenger side and up to safety while we waited for tow trucks to pull the van up. Each step up seemed daunting as my heart was pounding out of my chest and my mind filled with adrenaline. I am so thankful my children weren't in the van. Thankful my wife wasn't driving.  As nt adrenaline wore off I could tell something was wrong and had my wife drive me to emergency room.

Among the tests were CT and xrays. Fortunately at this point nothing seemed serious or long term. In the next few days my life was filled with falls and constant pain. On the day of my scheduled MRI scans I got to meet a war veteran waiting for cancer tests. He is a hero with a great history, I thanked him for his service and time he shared his memories.  Within an hour of being home I took my biggest fall and smashes my face on our cement porch.  Unable to get up from the screaming pain, my terrified wife called 911 and back to the hospital I went. Now another round of concussion tests and xrays to try and explain why my right arm and leg feel broken. But all tests come back ok. An impatient and detached emergency room doctor discharged me after running a urine test to make sure I wasn't high on drugs. Thankfully my primary doc was able to see me the next day. That's when I got the news that I am not stable enough to be walking. This new set of wheels is not what I was looking for.  For those of you that know me can attest I am a very independant person.  Refusing to show weakness for my children's sake, I inquire about getting wheelchair through insurance only to hear most companies remotely close only bill Medicare, I  add it to a credit card and cross my fingers for reimbursement.  They found that I have injured my neck and ruptured a disc that is pressing on my nerves that go down my right arm. This has been able to explain why my right arm and wrist feel like they are continuously being crushed pr snapped. No one has yet to conclude why my right leg feels broken and just gives out on me when I try to stand.
Fast forward a few weeks, they found nothing wrong with van and body shop repaired and returned van to us. We pay our deductible and are supposed to be good as new. Terrifying to ride in van I have no choice but to suck it up and trust in mechanical testing that says it should not happen again. While in the same breath no one can say why it happened in the first place. Stuck in car payments where it makes no financial sense to attempt to trade in or sell, we push on and swallow our fear.
Currently out of work going on 2 months. My job is protected another 4 weeks but sick time is all but exhausted. Our savings is tapped out and medical bills are being put on credit cards. More and more bills come in each week. Ambulance ride, diagnostic and imaging, physicians,  copays and prescriptions.
Appointment after appointment doctors put me off work 2 weeks at a time. Last week doctor asked me if I want him to fix my neck or leg first. I choose neck as at least someone can push me around in wheelchair but if I can't use my arm I can't get back to my job of the past 10 years. I have tried to stay positive and hopeful to get back on my feet (again pun fully intended). This past week I have had my first attempt at spinal injection to help alleviate some of the pain shooting down my arm. This has been an excruciating process filled with stabbing pains and throbbing pain throughout my back and neck. If this does not improve then the next step is spinal/neck surgery to replace the disc. Because no one else was involved this claim has gone through my car insurance and already maxed our policy so the rest comes from medical insurance which I am sure you all are very familiar with patient portions of every possible charge under the sun.
I am not one to ask for handouts and I am the first one to help out anyone in need. Watching the bills add up and my leave run out I am scaref for our house, our car and the impact it will have on our children. That is what has made this extremely hard to tell my story here while asking for your help. With two kids in high school and one in preschool to say money is tight would be an understatement. I believe in our community and I am here asking if you are at all able to help my family please help? I will be forever grateful.
One last pun just so you know I am not a robot...please help my family get back into the swing of things :)

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
Sincerely,
Jasan Winship Sr & Family
