My son jarett was becoming lethargic the beginnning of last week. (march 28) he thought it was just a bowel back up and let it go thinking it would resolve itself.

Unknowing to us all, it almost cost him his life. I came home from work early on 3/30/16 only to find my son completely lethargic, clamy and shaky. I immediately put him in my car and off we were to the hospital.

To shorten a rather long story, it goes like this.
He was in complete kidney failure and his body had become toxic due to a massive infection which was initiated by diverticulitis. The doctors in the ER determined that they had to stabilise him before they could even consider surgery to remove the infection. Xrays were taken to determine the degree of infection and it was immediately decided to place a drain in his abdomen to remove some of the infection. Little did we know how serious this was about to become. Once the drain was placed it was determined through blood work that his other organs were beginning to fail. To do any kind of surgery they had to try to stabilise him. They attempted to do that the remaining part of the day.

On March 31, 2016 we were continuing to watch my son decline. Constant vomiting of bile, he was hooked up to iv's and heart monitors not to mention oxygen. As the day progressed into night he grew weaker, continued to vomit bile and became delirious as a result of the massive septic infection that was basically taking over his body. Around midnight he began to complain seriously about pressure in his chest . I flipped out on the medical staff to do something.. They came in placed a NG tube to drain his stomach. That turned into the night from hell. Upon that insertion he proceeded to projectile vomit all over his bed and the room. We are talking it was like an exorcist moment. He then proceeded to accumulate over 3000cc of bile . I went home once everything had been cleaned up and i saw that my son was somewhat comfortable. Once home I was then contacted around 2 am that surgery was scheduled for 11:30 am on the 1st.

By this time my son is now connected to a drainage bag, monitoring equipment and iv line. Due to the fact that his kidneys were failing they had also put in a line in his neck to do dialysis

The morning approached for his surgery. They continued to keep him heavily medicated for the pain and the infection. He's not very coherent not only because of the meds but because of the mass infection attacking his body.

To summerize to this point going into surgery. He has a drain in his right side and a dialysis line in his neck (he already had also been through 2 4 hour dialysis treatments) he's on constant oxygen and has an NG tube in his nose going to his stomach. He has multiple iv lines and a cathiter because he's unable to move on his own. After that dreadful moment of saying goodbye and praying for nothing but the best outcome they take him into surgery.

That was a long grueling almost 4 hours of not knowing how it was going or how bad it was.
The surgeon immerged from the OR to give us the news. While he made it through the procedure, the news wasn't that good and we were told there was a lot of damage to his large intestine. His organs were still in shut down mode and he now has a colostomy bag for at least the next 3/4 months. Once we got to see him it was heartbreaking seeing him lying there on a respirator still not knowing if his body was strong enough to fight and if his organs would begin to function on their own. Now it becomes a waiting process.
He was placed directly in the SICU where even as I type this 6 days later he still remains.

His progress each hour was so minor but considering he was hours away from dying, anything gave us hope.

As of this writing we still dont know how much of his intestine he lost but according to the surgeon and the gastro doctors the damage was severe and massive. His incision goes from the middle of his chest below the sternum down to the very low of his abdomen and then he is cut from right to left.

He started showing very slow yet positive signs of improvement when we got hit by yet another setback. They called in the infectious disease specialist, because his lower abdomen was turning red,not to mention the ungodly smell indicating that there was still infection throughout his body but centralizing in his abdominal area.
After many more blood draws and tests it was determined that he had not 1 but 2 strains of ECOLI bacteria. Again another fight.. He just couldn't seem to catch a break.

Its been 8 days now and he is still in SICU with no promise of a date of release to a regular room.

He has a VERY LONG road to recovery. Not only has it massively changed his life but it has temporarily altered the lives of immediately family. I (his mother) took a leave of absence from work. Unfortunately that leave comes unpaid and already the bills are coming in for his medical care,( which i truly expect to hit 1 million dollars) not to mention our normal household bills which are sliding because there is no income currently coming in. I believe god will send us angels to help us through this hard time, but at no time could I in clear conscious leave my child till I know for sure he is out of danger.

We have always been a family of giving back or helping when others have faced emergencies of any kind and Jarett has one of the biggest hearts around.

I am thanking in advance anyone who helps in ANY way my sons unfortunate situation. Down the road I will be more than willing to give back/ pay it forward because I know what it means to almost lose what means the world to you. Thank you bunches..from our family to yours god bless Jarett and eveyone for all there help God Bless.
