Jambo everybody!
My name is Jared Kurish, I am 21 and am finishing my third year of International Development Studies at the University of Ottawa (French Immersion).
From May 6th to May 28th, 2016, I will be in Kenya completing a field research course with the Faculty of Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa.
The field research course will be at Kenyatta University (feel free to Google it!), with other students from uOttawa and Kenyatta U. The point is to pick a topic (that is usually qualitative in nature) and go into the field with a professor and/or Kenyan student(s) and execute interviews, questionnaires and focus groups. The link between sport and education is what really interests me!
The money being raised covers accomodations (food, housing and transportation in Kenya), the two plane tickets, vaccinations and the uOttawa field resarch course (so tuition). * Even though the course is being taught overseas, it counts as part of a spring course at uOttawa*. The course code is SCS4210.
Additionally, the money being raised goes towards paying the Kenyan professors who give weekly lectures and being able to access services on the Kenyatta U campus.
Therefore:
- Food and accommodations, onsite academic excursions: $1500
- Airline ticket and travel insurance: $1000
- uOttawa tuition fees: anywhere between 250$ to 450$
- Vaccinations: between 250$ and 1000$ (travel.gc.ca)
- Kenya Visa: around 52$
Total: anywhere between 3000$ to 3500$. As one can see, this is relatively expensive.
Regarding funds, anything that is provided from you all helps: 5$ to 50$ or what ever seems fit or appropriate. I apprecaite anything, as this is the first step to my international career. My prayers have been answered and I cannot wait for the experience that has been a long time coming!
