On Friday morning, we got a call that would stay with us all day. A member of the public had found a tiny dog curled up in his shed the night before. He’d taken her inside, wrapped her in a blanket, and knew something was very wrong—but he didn’t know what to do. So he called us.
When our kennel manager saw the videos he sent, she knew immediately: this little dog needed some help...She wasnt sure why ,it was a gut feeling —so she told the man to bring her to pur sanctuary asap .
When she arrived, what we saw made our hearts ache. Pink—a sweet, terrified little dachshund—had two enormous lumps on her underbelly. It was also clear she had been a breeding machine with signs of a recent litter possibly a couple of months ago ...She was weak, dehydrated, and clearly in pain. There was no time to waste. She was rushed straight to our vets.
She went onto a drip to stabilise her, and once she was strong enough, she underwent emergency surgery. What our vets found inside was horrific: She had obviously had two untreated hernias which were now full with remnants and bits of a dead or dead puppies from her previous litter. They had caused a huge infection that could/would have killed her.
This little girl had been left to suffer alone—and she was lucky to still be alive.
Thanks to the incredible skill and care of our veterinary team at A Country Practice Vet Clinic , the surgery was a success. Her hernias were cleaned out, she had an emergency spay, and thankfully her bladder and uterus—entwined around the hernias—were unharmed. She stayed with the vets for two nights to recover before finally returning to GalwaySPCA on Sunday.
But the suffering didn’t end there. Pink also had a severe case of ear mites, a heavy tapeworm burden, and eye problems.
She had obviously been scavenging for food, resulting in herc passing bits of tin foil and string.
Tracing her microchip revealed she had been imported from Hungary six years ago—another victim of the cruel reality behind the demand for “cute” puppies.
Pink is now safe at our sanctuary. She is sweet, gentle, and loving—but her eyes tell the story of the ordeal she has endured. She was abandoned, left to suffer, and yet somehow survived. Thanks to a caring member of the public and the incredible dedication of our vets, Pink has been given a second chance at life.
Her journey is a heartbreaking reminder of why we do what we do—and why every dog deserves love, care, and safety. Pink’s story is far from over, and we will make sure the rest of her life is filled with nothing but kindness.
Pink was just one of NINE DOGS we had to take into our care over 24 hrs this weekend gone ...
Not only causing unbelievable stress to our amazing kennel team who are already working long ,demanding days but also bringing new finacial stressvonto our already overstretched, limited funds ...
We try not to ask for finacial help too often but the last 48 hours has really taken its toll ....
If you can help us raise some much needed funds by donating whatever you can ,we would b3 as always extremely grateful ...please know that all monies raised go towards changing and saving the lifes of our animals ...
You help us make that change..
