My mom is a grandma of 5 active grandkids and mom of 3 girls.  She’s always been a hard worker and goes above and beyond for her family, friends, and neighbors.  Until recently when she was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.    We got her diagnosis back in August of 2022.  For a person that wasn’t a drinker it had us all very confused and scared.

Cirrhosis is where fluid builds up in her abdomen causing extreme pain and pressure.  The doctors at the U of M had told mom and the rest of the family that she would eventually need to have a liver transplant.  Hearing this left, us even more confused and with more questions than answers.  Finding a liver donor isn’t an easy thing and people can wait a very long time before they get one.   We as a family decided that we all wanted to be tested to see if we could donate part of our liver…unfortunately as of now none of us are a match.

Over the last 10 months mom has gotten steadily worse with the retention of fluid on her belly and has had to have that removed through a procedure called paracentesis.  It had gotten to a point where she was having this procedure done once weekly.  Her health took a turn for the worse within the past 2 weeks, instead of having fluid build up in her stomach it is now building up in and around her lungs.  She has gotten weak and short of breath with this new onset of symptoms. While out visiting friends, mom suddenly became very ill and went into the hospital for a week in MI. She then had to be taken back by ambulance to MN to get to her transplant doctors to be reassessed.  Once the assessment was done, we found out her condition had gotten way worse than anyone had thought, mom was listed on the national transplant list as of Wednesday May 9th.  She will be able to come home soon but will more than likely be on oxygen.

Mom hasn’t been able to work since all of this started back in August of 2022.  We as a family are trying to make mom as comfortable as we can and surround her with as much love and prayers until we are able to find her a donor.  If you feel inclined to donate our family would greatly appreciate all the help we can get right now.  Thank you and God Bless – The Massop Girls
