~Aloha ~
We are starting this GoFundMe campaign on behalf of our 77 year old mom/grandma Jane Whitefield who has lived on the Big Island of Hawaii in the neighborhood of Leilani Estates, on Nohea St. since 1997.
*WHAT HAPPENED*
Jane was abruptly evacuated from her home due to the first of many volcanic eruptions that are ongoing, very scary and intense with no end in sight. She was only given 5 minutes notice to evacuate and was not ever allowed to return to her home due to the extreme danger of being between fissure 8 and 9. She was NEVER able to say goodbye to her home or collect precious and valuable belongings. Jane was alone at the time and only able to grab a few things. She was barely given time to rescue one out of three of her cats, her sweet 14 year old kitty “Sassy”.
Jane’s entire property and house were swallowed by the the lava on May 29th, 2018. Jane lost EVERYTHING, her house, her 2 other kitties and all her belongings to the lava and fires. That house was her retirement, as well as her happy place; she had planned to live out the rest of her life there in the jungles of Puna. Her house had no insurance due to to the nature of the area and she is now left completely devastated financially and emotionally.
This plan has turned into a tragedy with no end in sight, so we are asking for your help.
During this whole traumatic time (even while living in a tent at the rec center) she maintains her giving nature and by helping everyone around her. She has always been a giver and even in her current situation she is thinking of and helping others.
*CURRENT SITUATION*
She is temporarily staying at the Pahoa Evacuation Center. She is volunteering by helping other evacuees with taking care of their animals and has been helping reunite families with their pets by visiting the animal shelters regularly. She is also supporting other evacuees through this time by helping them get comfortable, specifically, finding alternative comfortable sleeping arrangements for the elderly.
Jane’s current living situation is between a small tent in the rec center(which was donated) and her truck. Before this, she was sleeping on a single cot in a rec center with hundreds of others and no privacy at all.
She now needs to relocate and needs help financially to secure a place to live and replace her belongings. The cost of living in Hawaii is very expensive with the cheapest rent, unfurnished apartment in the Hilo area running around $1,500 a month (not including utilities).
She needs financial help with rent deposits, first months rent, pet deposits, utility deposits, and replacing those items that were left behind. In addition to these expenses, she will also need help recovering from the unexpected expenses, in addition to her everyday expenses (food, gas, laundromat, cat supplies).
Jane is retired, on a very fixed income, and lived alone HER HOUSE WAS HER ONLY ASSET.
The shock and trauma of this event coupled with 100% loss of her home and all possessions is taking a toll on my sweet mom, I am reaching out for support while she waits on possible government sponsored programs for recovery. This will take months to complete and there are no guarantees that claims will be approved. She needs this financial support now.
*How You Can Help Jane?
At this point, we are asking for financial contributions for Jane. She would never ask for help on her own. She is a giver, she has spent her whole life giving and helping others.
100% of your donations will go towards making a difference in her life right now and getting her set up in a decent living situation and rebuilding her life.
All donations whether they be small or very large are deeply appreciated.
“It would really help us a bunch get the word out, you can share our link to your Facebook Timeline”.
*Mahalo for your compassion, love and generosity.*
