My name is Janet Sarver. I am 74 years old and married to the love of my life, Vernon, 80, for fifty years. We have lived a wonderful life together until 2020 when the disaster of Covid caused us both to lose our jobs. At the same time, Vern came down with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, for which he is still under treatment.

His medical bills and inflation drained our lifelong savings. At this point, we were keeping up as best we could till a sewer pipe broke under our kitchen floor and needed to be dug up and replaced. It’s been frustrating because there have been no leaks that we can see at this time. However, there are hundreds of sewer flies every day, which we finally pinned down to originating from under the kitchen sink; a pipe broke under the slab. Our homeowners insurance won’t cover it because they consider it wear and tear on pipes. The estimate does not include the replacement of the flooring. In a few nights, we can trap a thousand of these things.

We dread the heat that summer will bring next week. We live on social security. We can’t afford to move or refinance our mortgage. Our credit is excellent, but our income is too low. I don’t know what else to do. My husband can’t work, and I’m not having much luck finding a job. I’m not strong enough to do the work I did for 20 plus years. Asking for help is so hard, but I humble myself before you. I’m usually the one that gives help, but for the past five years, we have given up spending money on our grandkids, something that gave us so much joy. We take no vacations, and the one thing we do to enhance our lives is feeding the birds in our backyard. We so desperately want to hold onto our house. There is truthfully no place to go that costs less than what we pay now. Thank you all for any support you send.
