Help Janessa and Christian get back on their feet!

My older sister Janessa lives in Alabama with her 10-month-old Christian. Unfortunately, her apartment caught on fire due to her downstairs neighbor. She was able to make it out with the clothes she had on but lost everything she owned. She is staying with my parents, who live in Mobile, as she gets back on her feet.

I don't think I will ever forget the wavering in my mom's voice as she told me what happened. It hit home when I woke up on Monday and started my weekly routine. Then it hit me hard, and I couldn't shake the sinking feeling that....I could've lost my sister and nephew over the weekend. I couldn't comprehend her terror and confusion as she fled her apartment. This is all still surreal as our family supports her through this time.

I was able to see her on Monday, 10/17, and she described to me how she escaped through the smoke. She told me how the flames were coming up through her apartment's floorboards, and she decided to leave everything behind. In the following moments, as she made it outside, the fire quickly spread throughout her living room where she had been minutes before. The fire was so big that the flames climbed over the windshield of her SUV. The headlights melted and the glass shattered from the heat. It's one thing to see in movies, but seeing it in person is a surreal feeling.

We are getting together anything that we can spare for her in the meantime as she figures out what the most important things are that she needs.
