Jane’e was raised by her grandmother. She is a first-generation college student - the first in her family to pursue a medical degree. A high-achieving student throughout high school and college she received many scholarships and accolades for her hard work and determination. In medical school, she continued to shine through her diligence and dedication, giving back to her community through her mentoring efforts. Murray went on to receive the Dean’s Award, a highly-revered scholarship and research opportunity. She soon became the poster-child and was featured on Student Spotlights and online publishing for UC Davis Med.
In the Summer of 2017, as a second year medical student, she was subjugated to baseless discriminatory accusations, mistreatment and harassment by one of her professors. Jane’e took her concerns to her Dean and school administrators, but instead of supporting her, they backed the professor and allowed the discriminatory conduct to continue. Although, there were many opportunities to come to the student’s defense and clear the air, Jane’e was advised by one of her deans, to “ suck it up”- which she did.
To defend herself and give the administration an incentive to stop the mistreatment, Jane’e was forced to do the only thing she knew how to do, which was to hit the books. This time however, they were LAW books. Self-represented, Jane’e proceeded to file a lawsuit against her institution. She managed to accomplish this in the midst of studying for her medical board exam.
Jane’e tried to settle the claim. UC Davis’ response was an anti-SLAPP motion in which UC seeks to dismiss her claim and force her to pay their attorneys’ fees.
As if being a medical student wasn't hard enough, Jane'e--acting as her own lawyer--must also juggle being a student of law. Though progress has been made in her legal case, she feels that it is only fair that she be allowed to focus solely on finishing her medical degree. Not just fair to her, but to the patients she will one day serve.
Your donation would go towards helping Jane'e secure legal representation. So that she can finally realize the goal she came to medical school for: providing excellent medical care for communities of color.
