Our dear friend Jane Hanson, a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and great friend of many, has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Jane has spent her working lifetime in service to others. She was a special education teacher for many years before she went back to graduate school to pursue her passion for helping others and earned her second masters degree in social work. After a year long arduous but successful treatment for hepatitis C, she worked in Hawaii and later at local Bay Area hospitals and organizations as a medical social worker, giving resources and a voice to those often facing the inequities of health care in our system.. Most recently, she has been at UCSF and Kaiser, working in a variety of departments, including Palliative Care and the Emergency Department.
She is the primary wage earner for her household which includes her husband with advanced Parkinsons disease, and his full time caregiver. Two of her three children have young families and live far away and one lives locally. All are incredibly loving and supportive of their mom,(and dad) but are not in a position to step in to offer more concrete support at this time.
Prior to Jane’s cancer diagnosis, Jane and her family had worked out a plan to provide for Kenton’s care and a more sustainable living situation for Jane, as their finances can’t support their long term stay in the Bay Area. Jane had planned to retire(at age 72) and no longer would be able to provide for all of the family needs with her salary. This is still the plan. Unfortunately, due to Jane’s cancer diagnosis, it has had to be put on hold, in order for her to receive treatment here at UCSF, one of the premier cancer treatment centers in the country.
Because of her employment status at the UCSF and Kaiser systers, Jane is not eligible for any disability benefits, nor FMLA, so her salary has abruptly stopped. As one would expect, Jane's cancer treatments, which include both chemo and surgery, leave her unable to work, and have necessitated a medical leave, without pay!. Although Jane and Kenton have very limited retirement accounts, Jane fears that using those to pay for her care and living expenses now could lessen or even lose a vital safety net to assure that her husband Kenton can have the best possible care he needs.
At the end of Jane’s treatment, in early 2021 Jane and Kenton will continue with their plan, and will again be able to provide for their needs adequately with their own resources. In the meantime, we are hoping to raise between $20,000 - $25,000 which would make up for Jane’s inability to work, cover the family’s living expenses, and allow her to focus on her treatment goals without added anxiety and concern.
In addition to being the center of her entire family, Jane has been the strength and constant support to her many friends as we have gone through the transitions life brings. She has been an amazing partner to her many colleagues and an exceptional mentor to younger colleagues and friends.
Now we want to be there for Janie and Kenton. Please join us in supporting Jane during her treatment.
Jane sincerely believes that every person in her life has supported her beyond any way imaginable, and this support and love is a gift and treasure. She asks that you please believe that all of this has been more than enough and offer no more than you wish or can. “My cup is already filled to the brim; anymore will be a flood and surfeit of riches”
Thank you,
