I came across a Facebook post by someone in no position to help a sick puppy (about 10 weeks old) she found dumped on 12/21, and felt compelled to help. So I immediately went to pick her up and took her to the ER. What I was expecting to be a virus or something that required some medications and TLC, turned into a much bigger ordeal than I can handle financially. I am not a rescue, but have had some guidance from a few.
After 4 different hospital visits, she began treatment. She has Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) which is the most common type of vascular ring anomaly in dogs. It results from the failure of a fetal vessel to regress as the puppy develops in the womb. Typically, the right aortic arch regresses after birth; but when it doesn’t, it entraps the esophagus as the puppy matures (like a tourniquet), making it very difficult to swallow, resulting in regurgitation and malnutrition. Unfortunately, she also developed pneumonia from aspirating her regurgitation.
She is home from the hospital where she will continue to heal from the pneumonia and gain strength for the surgery needed. But all of this is thousands of dollars, when I was expecting about a $500-600 bill when I decided to pick her up.
She wants to live, and she has the fight in her! I’d love to help her have a normal life, as she hasn’t even had the chance in her short time. If you can, I’d really appreciate the help!
