Janazah & Burial Funds - Br. Kieth
Donation protected
Asalam Alikom Brothers and sisters,
We have a situation of an abandoned Muslim body. The brother, 49 year old K.L.W., of Martinsburg WV, passed away at the beginning of November, 2020. The funeral home has tried to contact the spouse, K.M.W., also of Martinsburg WV, by letter post, multiple phone calls, only to have no response in procedure of burial.I.e.: The daughter of the deceased had contacted our funeral home when the deceased passed away, and stated that the body needed to be picked up right away as to bury the deceased as a Muslim. After that and in several discussions, the daughter had stated that she was in the process of collecting donations and would get back to us soon. She had, at another time, stated she was waiting for the check to come from the deceased’s 401K. After 10 days, all contact ceased. We were unable to reach the family. We now have a brother who can not withstand long term storage (without embalming) but is in a refrigeration unit and has been for a month. Meaning, we can not continue to store his body without embalming and we wish not to invade the body but rather present to the family that all services are scheduled and paid for as to obtain agreement to proceed.
We can only assume (and understand) that the deceased’s family actually do not have funds to conduct the burial. The death certificate has been filed and burial permits issued; therefore place of burial can not be easily changed should we need to push for legal recourse to conduct the burial, I.e.: legally forcing burial, as the deceased’s family did state what cemetery they wanted the body buried in. Therefore, place of burial is determined but not the funds to cover the burial, nor the “green light” from the family. We assume that in person contact with the family (showing up at their home in WV) and presenting that the funds have been raised will prompt agreement to proceed.
We humbly request that the brother’s deceased corpse becomes property (quasi-property) of the ummah, meaning that the community of Muslims adopt the burial and assist in funds to cover burial, funeral, and legal expenses to require the burial by legal means where necessary.
We have kept the names of the deceased and the family private as to make it easy for the family to accept the help shamelessly. Burial/funeral services included bringing the deceased out of WV, into VA, and ultimate burial in MD. Therefore, at the chosen cemetery already specified (requested) by the family, the total service cost, including legal fees, burial ground, headstone, all storage, transportation, potential legal expenses, etc. will cost about $8,000. Also, the last Go-fund me Janazah fund that was set up had $497 left over, so we will need approximately $7503 to proceed. May Allah reward the community for their effort to resolve this and lay the brother and his soul to rest. Ameen.
