Introduction

Dear Dharma Brothers and Sisters, family, and friends. My name is Jamyang Losel, I am a western Buddhist monk residing in the Washington, D.C. area currently living in and helping care for a small dharma center on the outskirts of the capital.

I am excited to announce that I have been accepted into the Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo Translator Program in Dharamsala, India. This spring I will be moving to India to study colloquial and classical Tibetan for the purposes of learning translation and interpretation. It is my hope afterwards to then be able to study as a monastic shedra (i.e. college), to hone my Tibetan and become better educated in Tibetan Buddhist ritual and philosophy. I aspire to meet these goals to help progress the Buddhadharma and the Sakya-pa tradition for those here in the states and west in general.

After many years of waiting for the right causes and conditions now is the time to commit and pursue my dreams towards becoming a translator and scholar practitioner – following in the footsteps of my teachers and other great luminaries of the past, present, and future.

In the winter, during the programs “Winter Break”, I will be residing at Ngor Monastery in Manduwalla India to further immerse myself in the Tibetan language and to study monastic rituals.

What is the Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo Program?

The Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo Translator Program (LRZTP) is a specialized two-year Tibetan language program which provides students with a broad knowledge of colloquial and literary Tibetan, as well as Dharma terminology.

The first two years focus on Tibetan language with special attention to Dharma terminology. The second component is intended for those individuals who wish to pursue a career in Tibetan interpretation. It will last two months and will focus on interpreter training.

The first program will run from:

October 2, 2020 until November 11, 2022

The Interpreter Training Program will commence in Spring 2023, specific dates have yet to be announced.

Sponsorship

To pursue these goals however means I need your help. I will be resigning from my secular job and thereby forgo any source of secured income. In order to actualize these aspirations I must take on the uncertainty and risk, but, anything good worth doing always has it’s challenges. As much as I have attempted to be independent, I realize none of us live in a vacuum, all is interdependent and we constantly rely on the help, kindness, and generosity of others. So, I am asking for your help to meet these challenges today.

I’m seeking support of $3,000 USD to help cover my necessities such as food, shelter, possible medical expenses, etc. Below I’ve attached my budget

Budget

This schedule is only the total costs for the first year. For the second year I estimate my costs to be $5,200; For the interpreter training program I estimate my costs to be approximately $3,100. Any funds raised over the requested amount will go towards off-setting the costs of subsequent years. Once I have been accepted into a shedra in summer 2023 personal expenses should be negligible as the monastery will provide major necessities.

My Promise to You

Thank you for your time, support, as well as your confidence which means more than you know. I will take full advantage of my time in India by studying diligently and successfully. Spiritually I will absorb all that I can, learn all I can so as to fulfil my responsibilities as a monk to preserve and disseminate the Buddha’s doctrine to all that wish to receive dependent on their capacity and to practice what I have learned. Additionally, I will keep you all in my thoughts, prayers, and dedications, and perform prayers on your behalf in my available time. Financially, I will uphold my fiduciary responsibilities with the funds you have entrusted me to go towards those necessary expenses outlined in my budget and will publish a summary of expenses bi-annually.

Once more, thank you! I wish you all auspiciousness throughout the day, happiness and the causes of happiness now and always.
