Independent journalism in Jammu and Kashmir is disappearing at a critical moment under relentless repression, unannounced censorship, and pervasive surveillance. Credible reporting has become nearly impossible, disappearing accurate information and community voices.
Kashmir Times, a legacy newspaper since 1954, was shut down after relentless targeting in 2022. It was revived digitally in 2023 and exists to preserve independent journalism in one of the world's most heavily militarised regions. Despite increasing challenges and pressures, we are committed to preventing the complete loss of trustworthy local information and to stopping propaganda from filling the void.
Both in Indian and Pakistani-administered territories, Kashmir has become an information vacuum where only state narratives exist. This was demonstrated amply during the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict when dominant media reportage was focused on the jingoistic frenzy of the two states overshadowed the human cost: displaced families, border casualties, and destroyed homes.
For the Kashmiri and broader South Asian diaspora, this information blackout severs connections to ancestral communities and obscures the reality facing relatives still in the region. Without independent reporting, diaspora communities cannot understand their own histories, or counter the nationalist propaganda that shapes perceptions of Kashmir globally.
We provide fact-based journalism documenting human rights, shared struggles across the Line of Control, and governance failures, guided by internationally recognized standards. Through youth-led cross-border networks, we amplify marginalised voices, connect divided communities, and rebuild local news as a civic utility, and a catalyst for peace, dialogue and democracy. We bring ground reports on governance, human rights, civic issue and the environment.
