Our Next Stop: College

Donation protected
Congratulations to Jamestown's graduating high school seniors, aka "YAPsters".  All seven of our graduating seniors are about to take the next step of their journey (COLLEGE!) and we are hoping for lots of love and community support from you!  In a City where only 68% of Latino youth graduate high school, we are incredibly proud that once again, 100% of Jamestown YAPsters will be graduating from High School and starting college this fall!

Help us get them started with money for books and initial college expenses.  Jamestown hopes to raise $1,000 for each of our graduating students.

Meet Ruth. Ruth and her family immigrated from El Salvador to San Francisco. Ruth started her education in the US at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, where she first enrolled at Jamestown in the 3rd grade. “I was exposed to so many things at Jamestown! Art, music, math and reading.  Mr. Saul Anaya even supported me in my least favorite subject, history, telling me that he had lived it all”.  Ruth credits her Jamestown mentors for a lot of her school success. Jamestown supported Ruth with her college application process and will also provide help with picking classes in the fall.   She will attend City College in the fall, and hopes to transfer to Stanford University in a couple of years. As a Jamestown Youth Apprentice aka YAPster, she works as a teaching assistant at Cesar Chavez Elementary School (where she attended many years ago), teaching literacy skills to kids who are English language learners, just like she once was. Jamestown has been an extended family that has been there to support Ruth and her mom, and her 3 younger siblings, all of whom are also in Jamestown.

Like Ruth, Youth Apprenticeship Program members learn valuable workforce skills.  Earning a paycheck to help with family expenses is very important to low income youth.  At Jamestown, they also create lifelong friendships, and get the emotional and social support they need to succeed.  As part of the program, YAPsters also get support in financial capability, family planning, leadership development and college and career planning.

Congratulations Michael Garcia, Susana Hernandez, Keila Monzon, Chiunathan Ordoñez, Ruth Rodriguez, Manuel Rosas Martinez, and Ivonne Villanueva!!!!

Jamestown Community Center has been around for over 40 years.  We work with youth and families in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco, many of which have extremely limited resources.  Jamestown believes that if youth are surrounded with supportive relationships, enriching learning opportunities, and are given opportunities to exercise agency and participate in their community, they will grow to be successful adults.  We also believe it takes the entire community to help our kids succeed.  Will you please chip in?

We can't wait to see what our YAPsters do next :)
