James Weigel Transplant recipient
Donation protected
For those of you who have known "The Weigels'", you know that we are a close-knit family, who always opened up our home to friends and family. 5 children in the family, a country upbringing in Boston NY, and actively involved in Hamburg High school sports and athletics.
We now have 11 grandchildren in the family that make us proud!
Despite the "family first" motto, we have also faced some adversity. Our father (aka "Umpa") has fallen on hard times with his health. In the past 6 months to year- he has required many ambulance rides to the ER and has spent a significant amount of time in hospitals and inpatient facilities. He was even placed on "Hospice" and given 3 weeks to live (that was 3 months ago!). He has defied the odds, worked hard on good nutrition, keeping his body strong and his outlook positive. He is approaching 70 and we are not ready to give up.
With Buffalo Healthcare being limited in the care of end stage liver disease, we fought and persevered- finally getting him into University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester NY. They are the liver specialists in our region, and started the process of evaluating if he is a candidate for a liver transplant. We just received the news TODAY that he is officially "listed" on the donor recipient list for a new liver. It could be available in 24 hours or a few weeks, and his stable condition has to be maintained.
Due to his inability to join a benefit and COVID precautions, we have opted to do an online fundraiser and hope to have a gathering in the summer months- where he can enjoy his family/friends.
Many of you have reached out and asked how you can help- asking for help is a tough decision, but we dont want him feeling the financial weight once he has fought this battle.
We appreciate your care and concern and will keep everyone updated on his progress.
