My father, Roland Gilliam, now 81 years old, has been a pilot since he was 16 years old.  His dream was to one day own his own airport.  He has achieved that dream (Gilliam-McConnell Airfield BQ1).  Next on his list is to have a museum to honor aviation.  This fundraiser will help him realize that dream.

As a history teacher, I understand the importance of preserving and remembering history.  Museums play a critical role in sustaining artifacts and documenting culture.  This museum will help educate the youth about both our past triumphs and tribulations.   We can not let the history of those events die with the men who gave their lives to preserve our freedom.  We owe it to our past heroes to honor their memory.

Construction is in progress on the inside of the museum, with all work being done by Roland himself along with other museum members and volunteers.  With the increasing costs of materials, the total price has far exceded what is possible for out of pocket expenses.  The future of the museum is totally dependent on contributions and support from donors.

Roland's vision is to create a lasting memorial, not only to historical and current aviation, but to honor those brave air veterans who served our country and gave their lives to protect our freedom and the freedom that future generations can enjoy. It is hoped that everyone who visits the  museum will find it uplifting and interesting, increase their knowledge of the history of aviation, and think of it as a memorable experience. We are located in the beautiful Sandhills of North Carolina and the home town of James R. McConnell to whom the museum is dedicated.  For the history of the Lafayette Escadrille, Google James Rogers McConnell.  The museum is currently open by appointment only.

In addition to being a museum, there will also be a 50 X 68 ft. room to rent for venues, meetings, birthday parties, etc. which will be a tremendous resource for the community.
