James Mathewson Memorial Fund

In late August 2019, James Mathewson died in a tragic accident while camping with his son and brother in Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario (via the Boundary Waters National Park). The news of his death came late to members of the global content strategy community, and was met with shock and much sadness. Hundreds of people responded to his death by posting on his LinkedIn page, including the following:

“From the first time I ever spoke with James, I was impressed by his intelligence and knowledge on a number of subjects that we could both ‘nerd out’ about, because they are near and dear to both of our hearts. James had an accomplished career as an author, editor, content strategist, technologist, speaker, and analyst. I am incredibly sad for the loss of his great mind and heart in this world.  I will miss his kindness, compassion, intellect, and our collaboration. James had one of the best laughs I've ever heard when he really found something amusing, and I will always remember him and it.”

This perfectly captures James’s spirit and the impact he had on those he worked with. He was constantly pushing for new ways to talk about content strategy and how organizations could better implement and elevate the practice. His work benefited not only those he collaborated with directly but also practitioners and leaders all over the world.

James brought an intensity and passion to the content community that remains unmatched, and he truly loved his work. He continuously set himself apart from the crowd professionally, and personally. His professional cohorts regard him as an immensely generous and compassionate individual, with an unbeatable sense of humor. He will be missed dearly by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

James had just recently returned to his home state of Minnesota and was settling into his new home in St. Paul with his wife Beth and son John. We’re happy to know that Beth and John have an enormous amount of support from friends and family in the area; however, after James’s sudden death, this will be a difficult time of transition as Beth finds her way back into the workforce. And so, we see an opportunity to provide a cushion of support for their family during the months ahead.

To that end, we’ve created the Mathewson Memorial Family Fund. Donations will go directly to Beth and John Mathewson in an effort to allow them to focus largely on recovery during this traumatic time. Please consider donating to the fund not only in James’s memory but as thanks for his contributions to our field. If you’re not able to donate you may still leave comments for Beth and John.

With thanks, Kristina Halvorson, Cruce Saunders, Jeff MacIntyre, and Andrea Ames
