James Floyd Medical Expenses
Donation protected
James is a first-generation graduate student and a staple in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology at OU. This semester, James was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Costs have been amassing since the initial diagnoses that include ultrasounds, CT scans, checkups, and surgery that have left James struggling to pay the medical bills as a graduate student. Because this type of cancer has a 50% chance of returning, James must get blood work and CT scans done every two months to monitor for tumors. If all goes well this will be the most James has to continue to do; however, if a relapse occurs James will be placed on chemotherapy and potentially undergo more surgery.
The out of pocket maximum for the student health insurance plan is capped at $6,600 which means that James is responsible for ~$4,900 by the time his deductible and annual out of pocket expenses reset in August and be responsible for an additional ~$3900 from August to March of 2020 for his continued observation. This amounts to ~$8,800 in medical bills for the coming year assuming observation and blood work is all that is needed. When the graduate annual stipend is considered these out of pocket costs can amount to ~40% of the graduate student annual salary.
To help cover these cost and to prevent any struggle to keep up with the costs of living, any financial assistance would be greatly appreciated to directly cover the costs associated with his condition. Lastly, James has said that friendly conversations have gone a long way whenever someone is dealing with cancer. He's has received tremendous support from friends, family, and the department since his diagnoses and appreciates the time people have taken to make sure he and his fiancé are doing well.
