James Cox and Family

My name is James Cox (JC).  Many of you may not know me, but chances are that you’ve seen me around. I was a lineman for South Central Power and have proudly served our customers since 2007. Normally, I am the one who rushes out to help, but this time, my family and I are humbly asking for your help.

As natives of central Ohio, we all know how rough severe weather can be to our community and for our neighbors. As a lineman, I know this all too well. When the storms hit, I’d make sure that my beautiful wife Trisha (my childhood sweetheart) and our two children are safe. Then, I’d jump into my truck and head out to make sure the lights are turned back on. Our community counts on me and my linemen brothers and sisters to help restore power to our hospitals, homes, and businesses.

This is extremely hard for me to admit, but a different kind of storm has hit my family very hard. I have been diagnosed with ALS. ALS is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a motor neuron disease, most commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. The big difference is, that there will be no restoration or recovery from this storm (ALS). Over time, I will eventually lose my ability to walk, use my hands, speak, swallow, and eventually lose the ability to breathe.

I will not be able to walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding or play catch with my son. Eventually, I will not be able to say “I Love You” to my family and friends. I never thought at 35, I would have to face such a terrible storm.Until then, please know that I am fighting this disease with everything that I am and I’m grateful for the love and support of my family, friends, co-workers, and community.

We could use some help preparing our home for the rough road ahead. We will need to make home modifications, such as adding handrails and support systems that will help make it easier when I am no longer able to move freely on my own. I want to setup our home so that the burden does not become too great for my family.

We would sincerely appreciate any assistance you could provide us to help us weather this storm. It has been my privilege to serve our community. May God bless you all and thank you in advance for your help.
