On the morning of July 6, 2020, Sergeant James Buchanan left his home like any normal day, heading into work. While in his personal vehicle and in full uniform, Sergeant Buchanan witnessed a black pickup truck cross over the southbound lanes and strike a 67 year old gentleman who was with his 10 yr old grandchild, and witnessed the truck continue on and then wreck into a yard. The driver jumped out and Sergeant Buchanan who just witnessed a felony in progress and in full Sheriff's Office uniform, gave chase and at some point engaged with the suspect and Sergeant Buchanan was forced to shoot the suspect one time. The suspect was taken to the hospital and later died.

The driver of the truck carjacked the elderly 67 year old male along with his grandson and forcibly stole the vehicle by stabbing the elderly man, he then drove off with possession of the vehicle and intentionally turned around and intentionally ran the elderly man over with the truck.

Sergeant Buchanan was held as a local hero from stopping this man and preventing him from possibly physically harming anyone else. As the man had already displayed his purposely attempt of running over a 67 year old man and his 10 yr old grandchild after already forcing them from their vehicle by stabbing the 67 year old and taking the truck.

Sergeant Buchanan has the full support of Sheriff Vernon Betts as well as his fellow Deputies.

A grand Jury in St. Louis County recently indicted Sergeant Buchanan for 2nd degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.

Sergeant Buchanan is now faced with defending his split second decision and must now bare the cost of trying to defend himself and MUST pay for his own private attorney and take this matter to trial to prove his innocence, as he was acting in such away as to protect the citizens of his community as well as himself.

We are asking for the community to stand behind our Deputy who was acting as a Law enforcement officer who kept this deranged individual from hurting anyone else. If his current mindset allowed him to carjack and stab an elderly individual and who had a 10 yr old child with him and then take his truck and deliberately run over the same elderly man, what else was he capable of doing to others on that day. If you were a citizen who witnessed this horrific act and you had a licensed firearm would you have attempted to apprehend this mad man as well to protect your community. I know I would of and a lot of other people that I know as well.
