Jamel's Courageous Cancer Battle

At just 36 Years old, Jamel Fernandez is a much loved daughter, wife, and full time working mother. Jamel and her husband have 3 beautiful children- Amenah, Selina, and Santana. Anyone who knows Jamel knows her as somebody that is incredibly compassionate, considerate, humble, and caring. She constantly puts the needs of others before her own. Jamel is a selfless mother to her children, and she is completely devoted to looking after them. Her children love, adore, and need their mother.

 

Shortly after her daughters high school graduation she was suffering extreme pain. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer effecting 10 of her lymph nodes. She had a Double Mastectomy in May '2017. One of Jamel's best chances to help fight the cancer and prevent it from spreading any further, was a 6 month treatment of chemotherapy and another 6 weeks of radiation. The effects of her Breast Cancer resulted in a hysterectomy shortly after her treatment as an added preventative to her Breast Cancer. Her children were devastated watching their mother go through the hardest time of her life fighting this extremely aggressive cancer.

 

Fast forward, a year later at her neurologist routine check up, she notified her doctor of terrible migraines. Migraines and pain throughout her body so bad that it was unbearable to continue to work and care for her children. An MRI was completed by a local hospital and they did not detect anything. Doctors were passive at the situation and started to treat her with simple medication for the pain she was suffering.

 

Months and months later of pain, Jamel began to start having double vision. She couldn't even see the faces on her children any longer. She visited her neurologist again, and was told that she was normal. She suffered the pain and stayed so incredibly strong during this time. Nothing was found but her symptoms still continued. She woke up one morning and felt her entire world was upside down literally with extreme vertigo. She knew that no matter what her Doctors have told her, something was still wrong.

 

She recently reached out to Ackerman Cancer Center. She had an immediate MRI and PET scan the following day. Results detected she has 6 Cancerous tumors in her brain, additional Cancer cells found in her skull, Cancer cells in her hip, and nonetheless her spine. The news shattered her family completely. There are no words how devastated everyone around her felt with this diagnosis as she continued to fight for her life. Jamel will be having a cycle of treatments everyday for three weeks to start with targeting the Cancer in her brain. Afterwards, another MRI will be completed to start treatment on the remaining other cancerous parts of her body, skull, hip, and spine.

 

It has been a Battle for four long years as she continues to fight against her reoccurring cancer. As always, Jamel is putting her children first and is facing this challenge full of faith, optimism, and complete courage. She is absolutely DETERMINED to give everything she has to fighting this awful disease so that she can be there for her three beautiful children, husband, and family.

 

Jamel's cousin Alea has set up this fundraising page in the hope of supporting the family during this incredibly difficult time, to cover the cost of the radiation, chemotherapy, and relieve some pressure due to the loss of income incurred from these tragedies. Her treatments are very expensive and she can require needing much more depending on how successful the sessions are.
