Public art can transform an environment. It becomes public history and part of collective memory. This kind of art reflects and reveals our community and adds meaning to our towns. Initiatives like Kingston Creative have gained incredible momentum in Jamaica's Capital city
so this summer The Wattle and Red Earth (WARE) Collective is sparking creative energy in rural St Elizabeth, Jamaica.
For our weekly Instagram Feature, "My Heritage, My Story" we invited persons to reflect on distinctive and defining parts of our heritage which keep us grounded in uncertain times. Now we bring the spirit of My Heritage, My Story offline as Zorhia Allen and Carolyn Elaine work together in an intergenerational mural-mosaic art project that will engage community from children in our Summer Camp to community elders...TO YOU!
We invite you to donate in the name of an ELDER, FAMILY MEMBER, FRIEND who always gives you wings to fly and roots to come back home. Your generous contributions and donations will cover materials, prep and wall treatments, tile, partial travel expenses, equipment etc.
This public art project that will:
• Beautify an underutilized space in the town
• Engage the community and our children's Summer Campers in a new way
• Amplify stories of heritage and history
• Inspire hope as we continue to manage the effects of a pandemic
***Our mural wall plaque will say “Gifted in the name of "YOUR ELDER, FAMILY MEMBER, FRIEND”
The piece will be mounted in Southfield Square and celebrate the spirit of Jamaica's south coast, collaboration across generations and the Diaspora.
