Hogar Nuestra Sra de los Remedios

We are a group of various families living and working in Guatemala City.  We have a passion for community service and want to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

We are currently raising money to buy playground equipment for an orphanage located in Jalapa, Guatemala, Hogar Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. This is an all girls orphanage run by a few Catholic nuns that was started in 1995. The story begins with one young girl who fled her home and family seeking refuge in the house of Marta and Maria, two of the sisters who work at the orphange. After that first incident of them taking this girl in to protect her and provide for her needs, the word spread fast and now they have over 100 girls living at the orphanage from three weeks old to twenty-eight years old.

After my husband and I visited the orphanage through some friends who took us there we were greatly moved by their living environment. Hundreds of girls with no place to play and nothing to play on or with. They were playing on old broken metal swings with nails and screws sticking out, very dangerous, mostly destroyed. We both knew we had to do something and so we decided to start fundraising to build them a big enough play ground that all ages could enjoy. So that is what we are doing!

We need to raise the funds by Friday, Nov. 6th, 2015. This deadline is in order to give us time to order the playground to be built, and have it delivered and installed by our Thanksgiving Deadline. We then plan to have all families interested in participating in this event go on Friday, Nov. 27th to inaugurate the playground and celebrate with the girls at the orphanage by bringing a lunch to share and planning fun games and activities for them to enjoy!

This project has been in our hearts since the first day we set foot at the orphanage.  We were moved by the joy and dedication of the sisters who work and serve all these orphaned and mistreated young girls. We were stunned by the lack of resources and funds they have and how everything they need is provided by people who decide to help and donate. We were affected by how much they were able to do and provide though everything they have is because of their faith. They live off of the kindness and generosity of people like you and me who want to give.

We hope that you will help us reach our goal by donating to this cause. We will celebrate together by sharing pictures and stories from our experience together on the 27th of November. We hope you can and will collaborate with us!

Thank you for your time and your efforts!

Sincerely,

Jamie Day and Miguel Sagastume
