My best friend, Jacob Russell, whom I’ve known for 12+ years was recently complaining of terrible migraines for a couple weeks and it only got worse day after day.
On February 13th he had left work and went to the ER where they did a CT Scan and discovered he had a large mass on the right frontal lobe area of the brain. Later that day he was transferred to Barnes Jewish Hospital for further MRI scans. After more testing and a 2 day hospital stay they decided surgery to remove the mass was the best option.
March 2nd he underwent a Craniotomy to remove the mass. Surgery went great and they were able to remove all of the mass, it was then sent of for pathology testing.
March 11th was the follow up appointment to check on the incision and find out the Pathology.
The doctor did not have good news. The doctor told Jake and his wife Kenna that the tumor that was removed was a Glioblastoma. Which is a stage 4 aggressive, malignant tumor.
While they were able to remove All of the tumor during surgery this particular tumor has "tentacles" as they call them. So even when removed there are cancer cells that cannot be seen with MRI that get left behind and continue to spread. . To try and slow the regrowth of the tumor down, Chemotherapy and radiation will be needed.
The doctor informed them that this type of cancer, even with treatment can greatly affect his life expectancy.
Jake will be starting treatment in the weeks to come and has to go 5 days a week for 6 weeks strait, then he'll go down to treatments 1 week out of the month.
In July he will return to his Neurologist for another MRI to see if the Chemo and Radiation is working.
Jake will not be able to work during this time and is the soul provider to his Wife and three children: ages 7, almost 2, and an infant.
I wanted to start this fund to help out with the overwhelming amount of bills that will begin to stack up and all of the extra expenses during his treatments.
This is going to be a difficult road but I know Jake, I know that he will fight this with his head held high and defy the odds! He is way too stubborn to not beat this!
