Please Help Our Jake

Donation protected
On Tuesday evening April 30th on our way to a local pet bakery to celebrate his birthday, Jake, our precious miniature long-haired dachshund was the victim of a vicious dog attack at our apartments pet relief area.  Sadly, before we even had a chance to fully open the door to the area, Jake, who weighs all of 18 lbs entered first, on his leash, and was immediately attacked by a large, very aggressive dog.  Sadly, our poor, innocent Jake had no chance.  The other dog was way too fast, way too big, and more importantly, was not on a leash.

The horrific attack was recorded on the apartments video surveillance camera.  It is not necessary to mention the breed of the dog that attacked Jake, as it really doesn’t matter.  What does matter is this unnecessary, horrific attack did not need to happen and would have been prevented had the owner had her dog on a leash.

Jake was rushed to the VCA Emergency Animal Hospital in West LA. where he underwent hours of emergency surgery.  What should have been a day celebrating Jakes life, sadly turned into a day where he was fighting for it.  The doctors informed us that even if he survived surgery, due to the severity of the wounds and the amount of inflammation in his little body he was at risk of organ or respiratory failure and due to the size and seriousness of the wounds (dog bites), which encompassed Jake’s entire rump and pelvic regions, they were unsure whether Jake would have any function in his back limbs to be able to walk, as all of muscles and soft tissue in those areas were crushed in the dog attack.  Jake spent the first week in the critical care trauma unit hooked up to IV’s for fluids, pain management and a special VAC system to keep the wounds under negative pressure and to encourage new and healthy tissue.  This past week, the wounds on Jake’s left side were able to be closed, but unfortunately due to the size and severity of the wound on his right side, it will be quite some time before it can be closed.  In the meantime, Jake is making tremendous strides learning to use his back legs and walk again.  He was considered a candidate for a specialized physical therapy that engages the surrounding muscles to eventually take on the role of the muscles Jake lost during the attack.

It is purely by the grace of god that our Jake was not killed that night.  His will to live and fighting spirit, all the prayers by so many people that know and love him, and the amazing doctors and staff at VCA are the reasons our Jake is still with us.

Our little super hero has reminded us of the importance of how precious life is. He has let us all know that he is not only going to make it, but he is going to walk again!

Unfortunately, with all the positive strides Jake is making, we have sadly come across an unexpected hurdle.  The owner of the other dog, who originally accepted full responsibility for the attack and told the hospital she was responsible for all all of Jakes medical bills has been unresponsive to the hospitals attempts to reach her for payment.  The night of the attack, she left a credit card on file at the hospital for all on going charges related to the attack, but after the first charge, her credit card was declined.  As upsetting and disappointing as this is, Jake is our baby and we are ultimately responsible for the cost of his care.  There are not enough words to describe our gratitude to the doctors, techs and staff of this amazing hospital that have loved, cared for and truly saved our little boy’s life.  As of today, Jakes medical bills are over $20,000.00 and will continue to go up until he is able to be released from the hospital and his wounds can be closed.

Sadly, we do not have the funds to pay the bills right now, but the hospital feels terrible that we have been put in this situation and will do whatever they can to work with us.  We will be signing a promissory note and making whatever payments we can while we try to raise some money.

Anyone who has met our Jake knows how important he is to us and how much we love him.  Against all odds, he is going to make it and we are asking for donations to please help us be able to pay for the medical care he has received, needs and deserves.  Please help us care for and bring our little super hero home.

We will be forever grateful.
