Jake Powers

Hey everyone, I’m starting this fundraiser for one of my dearest friends Jake. Jake is married to a wonderful woman, Kayla. They have 2 beautiful children, Wyatt and Olivia. Jake is a Firefighter-Paramedic at Burlington Fire Department, and also works as a Flight Medic for MedForce. He also picks shifts when he can at Henry County EMS. Jake is really the ‘Jack Of All Trades’ as I like to call him because he’s also in the National Guard.

Now to why I started this…

For the last couple weeks Jake has been dealing with a hemorrhoid that wouldn’t heal. The other day while at annual training Jake woke up and could hardly move, he decided to go to the ER at the University because there has been no relief. With a whirlwind of blood work done found that Jake’s blood levels were life threatening low. His hemoglobin was at 6. Preliminary blood work is saying acute myeloid leukemia. He had a bone marrow biopsy done. Which should tell us more information, but should take a couple days to get back results. They also placed a picc line. Jake had a blood transfusion and then had an echo done on his heart for a future baseline. Right now he is admitted in the cancer unit in Iowa City.

YESTERDAY:

This evening he received confirmation that he does have acute myeloid leukemia. We don’t know right now the extent or the variant we are still waiting on for the results from the bone marrow biopsy. The type of leukemia seems to be fast moving and they are lucky to have caught it when they did. even a couple weeks longer could’ve been detrimental.

He will receive chemo on Friday and they’re going to hit it hard for 7 days. They’re going to make sure that his numbers are doing what they’re supposed to be doing and it looks like he’ll be at the university for about a month.

Jake is going to be off of work for awhile so anything helps.
