Jake Purralta's vet care

So - our wonderful cat Jake had a urinary blockage.

It was extremely upsetting to him and to us- the last two days have been pretty frightening. The blockage meant that Jake couldn’t empty his bladder, which is very dangerous.

We hurried him to the Pet ER on Sunday and were quoted what is for us a completely unmanageable cost to have him hospitalized (Anywhere from $1500-3000). We were unable to cover it even with credit cards, and there was no way to have the hospital begin treatment while we tried to figure out a way to afford it, whether that meant borrowing money, setting up this gofundme, or selling one of our own kidneys, whatever. There aren't many options when it's Sunday afternoon and you're in the waiting room of the emergency animal hospital. You can either pay, or you don't get treatment.

We were able to borrow enough cash to combine with what we had on hand in order to pay to have the blockage removed, fluids administered, and medications provided so that we could take Jake home. We now need to take him for follow up at the regular vet, and will need to figure out what he needs in order to continue to recover. This could carry an initial cost anywhere from an additional $200 to $1500, we just don't know yet. At minimum he needs a follow up exam and bloodwork. He may need to receive fluids again. The vet may recommend that he be hospitalized at their facility.

I have been hand feeding Jake food and water since yesterday, and he is looking better but it's obvious that he's still feeling badly. He will not eat or drink on his own, and he isn't getting up to use the litter box. He's pretty messy and gross right now, but he's still being his sweet self. It's heartbreaking.

Jake showed up at our home last year as a stray and became an instant part of our family. He is our five year old daughter's best friend, he gets along with our high strung dog Watson (which means this cat has the patience of a saint), and he is generally the sweetest cat I've ever known.

The last thing I want to do is ask for money, but we have been dealing with *multiple* expenses over the last several months, and we have no cushion for a medical emergency. It's not ideal, but setting up this gofundme is the quickest way for us to fund Jake's care. As soon as Jake is stable we will stop accepting donations and if possible will return unused funds.

Thank you all so much for your support and caring. We (and Jake) really appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.
