On July 23, 2022, our family received a call that would forever change our lives. Our son, Jacob Mesi, fell over twenty feet and suffered a serious spinal cord injury after spending the day helping a friend clear brush and take down tree limbs on his property. Jake was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital where a nearly 8-hour spinal surgery was performed.
The surgery went as well as could be expected, but he currently has no feeling or movement from the waist down. Due to the severity of the injury to his spine, he is facing a long battle to rebuild.
Jake is 24 years old and was enjoying an active life prior to his accident. Being the warrior that he is, Jake is taking everything in stride and is looking forward to the next phase of his recovery - physical rehabilitation. He now faces weeks of in-hospital therapy as well as months of additional rehab once he’s released to go home. He will also need to move from his apartment into something more suitable to his needs and forego his job delivering for FedEx.
With Jake’s blessing, we are actively seeking out clinical trials for him to participate in involving stem cells, spinal stimulation and other therapies that offer hope to those who wish to regain function due to paralysis. We look forward to one day being able to bring him across the country – or wherever these trials are offered – and give him a chance to further his recovery. We have started this GoFundMe account to ease the financial burden stemming from immediate medical costs of the surgery, hospital stay, physical therapy, home/apartment modifications and (hopefully) future participation in clinical trials. Jake is worried about the financial burden all of this brings as the costs will be considerable. We want to ease his stress and allow him to focus solely on recovering. From the bottom of our hearts, we humbly ask that you help our son in this effort. You can do so by:
