Jaime's Journey: Family Needs Your Support

Hello, my name is Anna. I am Jaime’s sister-in-law. I came here to help my sister Justine with funds for medical and upcoming funeral expenses.
Now let me tell you a little bit about Jaime. He is a lovely husband and father. He met my sister in 2008 and they fell in love. He adopted her girls and they became his daughters too. He has always been there for them throughout anything. He has taken me and my family under his wing, as I call him dad at times too. He would do anything for anyone who needed help.
He was always there up until April of 2015 when he had a stroke and everything changed. He became bedridden most of the time. The only time he would leave the house was to go to Waffle House, his favorite place to eat. He was still able to drive at that time but still couldn’t do much.
We found out he had dementia, which made things worse. He couldn’t remember the last time he ate or drank. He would get up every 2 hours to eat, which I thought was crazy, but he didn’t remember eating prior to his last meal.
So on January 10th, 2025, Jaime was throwing up, which we thought was a stomach bug. Well, come to find out it wasn’t; it was worse.
My sister called 911 and they came and took him to the hospital. When he went in, the doctors thought it was pneumonia and sepsis. What they ended up finding is that he had Klebsiella pneumoniae, a rare sepsis-causing bacteria, which caused him to be sedated and on a ventilator in a medically induced coma for a week. He did finally wake up, but things still weren't looking good. He had to have an N-tube (feeding tube down your nose) put in so he could eat. After a few days, they gave him purées, but come to find out, it was going to his lungs. He failed his swallow study test, and the pneumonia came back with a vengeance. He still has a very nasty wet cough. He is still fighting. He was placed in a regular room with hopes he would get better, but he isn’t. He is too weak and just wants to rest. He can’t grasp anything or hardly speak.
The doctors wanted to put a G-Tube (gastrointestinal tube) for feeding, but Jaime has said he does not want that. He cannot take anything orally as it goes straight to his lungs and he aspirates.
He does have a DNR in place as the doctor has stated that his quality of life has diminished significantly. His Alzheimer’s and dementia are a lot worse. He remembers some things, like coffee, which is his favorite thing to drink. But he doesn’t remember certain timeframes or people at this point. He is just too weak to fight anymore.
It’s hard to say this, but he is done. (Those were his words.) He has fought long and hard. Right now, we are taking it day by day. If he does make it out of this, he will go into hospice and we go from there.
So if everyone could just share or donate it would be greatly appreciated.
We are fundraising to help cover medical and upcoming funeral expenses for Jaime.
