Jade's Recovery from a Kidney Transplant!

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! Jade received a kidney transplant on the Solstice, December 21st! Right now, Jade is currently in the hospital alone. We are fundraising so that people in Jade’s care team can make it to Vancouver and support Jade in their recovery process.

The first 4-6 weeks post surgery are crucial in supporting Jade’s recovery. As a migrant to Vancouver, they do not have a support network in the city and are relying on the support of their care team for a quick and successful recovery. We - Jade's support team - are a collective of 7 dear friends based in the States and Montreal. Because Jade’s new kidney came with less than 24 hours notice before the transplant took place, we are scrambling last minute to reorganize our lives so we can rotate support for Jade. Most of us are QTBIPOC and self employed and have little to no financial cushion.

The funds raised will enable the 7 person care team to fly to Vancouver and support Jade on rotation. Additionally, recovering from a major surgery means Jade will not be able to work for some time, they will not be able to drive, do any strenuous lifting or activities. Ensuring their body is healthy, reducing the risk of their body rejecting the kidney, and reducing risk of infection is critical. Funds raised will provide Jade’s basic needs such as rent, bills, groceries and medication, and will support Jade’s recovery by helping to cover costs associated with mental health and rehabilitative therapies.

The funds raised will enable the 7 person care team to fly to Vancouver and support Jade on rotation. Here is a breakdown of costs:

$1500 per person for flights + food for the week

= total $10,500

Transplant Recovery and Rehabilitation Fund: $20k

Recovering from a major surgery means Jade will not be able to work for some time, they will not be able to drive, do any strenuous lifting or activities. Ensuring their body is healthy, reducing the risk of their body rejecting the kidney, and reducing risk of infection is critical.

After a kidney transplant:

There is risk of rejection of the kidney and risk of infections post surgery

Rehabilitation through good nutrition, physiotherapy and lymphatic drainage is important for a good recovery

Follow up appointments with the hospital + transport there and back

Medication

Jade’s living costs -

Rent for 3 months = $6000

Utilities, transportation costs & Groceries for 3 months = $5000

Mental health and rehabilitation therapies (physio, massage, lymphatic drainage) = $4000

Previous debts from being unable to work whilst waiting for a kidney= $5000
