Diabetic Alert Service Dog

Dear family and friends – As you know, my daughter, JaDean has been a Type I Diabetic since the age of four years old.  Now at a mature 24 years of age, about to graduate from college and starting her IT career on her own, we are looking for your support with the extensive training, certification, licensing and insurance of a Diabetic Alert Service Dog for JaDean.   Our goal is to raise $12,000 to cover a substantial portion of the costs.  All donations towards this Go Fund Me would be 100% tax deductible (including personal and corporate sponsoring) as the service dog is a tool for JaDean under Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  All funds raised will be tracked and will go directly towards the training, certification and liability costs of the diabetic service dog for JaDean.

JaDean and her new puppy will be involved in a year+ long and VERY intensive training program with All Stage Canine Development here in the Sacramento area (www.allstagecaninedevelopment.com).  Sandra Moon (aka Aunt Sandy) will be donating an AKC purebred Havanese puppy to JaDean for this exciting new journey.  Havanese dogs are bred to be extremely loyal companions with very intelligent learning qualities and adapt quite easily in the training process.  Upon initial assessment with the All Stage training center, the Havanese will be a great small breed choice for JaDean’s new adventure into her next chapter of life.

We are currently working with All Stage on assessing the best service dog traits in the current litter of four week old puppies.  Sandra has already begun working on PH/Glucose level scent work with the puppies!  We will keep everyone posted and updated once an ideal candidate is chosen and named. (Suggestions are welcome!).  This a very comprehensive and intense socialization, glucose cueing recognition, and behavioral program.  The class-training program will formally start at the beginning of February 2019, when the puppy is 8 weeks of age.  It will begin with the initial service animal “puppy” preschool and private ADA training with JaDean and myself.  There will be additional levels of training; such as, canine good citizen (CGC), public access, cueing behavior and scent recognition associated with Diabetic alert training.  JaDean and her ADA dog will have to pass numerous tests for official Service Dog Certification.

When completed, the dog will be able, among numerous other behavior and obedience skills, to physically alert JaDean of her glucose/blood sugar “lows and highs” helping to avoid severe complications of Type I Diabetic related issues.  Along with alerting quick drops and rises in JaDean’s blood glucose level that could lead to major issues, the dog will also be trained to retrieve lifesaving items such as her meter, glucose tabs, juice box, etc.  JaDean has proven to be extremely motivated and driven to have this dog as an option in her life and move forward with not only a great friend, but also a potential lifesaving companion.

Thank you all so much for your support and if you have any questions or information on this process please feel free to respond or call anytime,  we are looking for positive feedback  to make this journey as successful as possible.   We will provide regular updates on the progress so you all can share in the experience.

Best,
Connie and JaDean
