Jadan's Journey

Donation protected
Friends and Family,

We all enjoy each other’s company, sharing laughter and fun times many of which are filled with good food, good fellowship, and just plain good ole’ down home good vibes.
However, I ask you to seriously take into consideration what I am about to share. What I am about to share IS life altering, life changing and one of the most earth-shattering experiences any parent or parental guidance will ever want their child to go through.

My family has been struggling through our smiles and covering our heartache with our heads held high.

BUT NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Some of you may have heard our daughter, Jadan Akerson, was diagnosed with End Stage Renal (kidney) failure; she is only 16.  Her diagnosis came exactly one (1) month after the passing of her papa, Robert Akerson, Jr.  On Nov. 29, 2018, at approximately 9:00PM, we received an urgent call from Jadan's doctor demanding for Jadan to head to the E.R. immediately!

A typical teenager, Jadan could be found "resting" with her cell phone in hand. After her papa's death, she started complaining of headaches and having swollen eyes and ‘resting a great deal’...typical of a grieving child - or so we thought.  Noticing the frequency of the complaints, we took her to the doctor.

Jadan was in Pediatric I.C.U. for two weeks where she was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure as well as having a tumor in her reproductive system.  She had to have surgery which resulted in the removal of an ovary as well as suffering major blood loss, having blood transfusions (bottoming out at one time – I won’t begin to tell you the emotions behind that!) all resulting from a kidney biopsy.  As well, she had to have a port placed in her abdomen in order to now have dialysis.

After being released from the hospital, Jadan had to endure 3 weeks of dialysis training - during Christmas break no less! As of now, she has to have PD dialysis daily!  She started off having to have four (4) treatments per day. Now, she's maintaining one (1) 7 1/2-hour treatment per day. Her daily dialysis treatment is cleaning out toxins in her body that she can no longer ward off herself due to only having 20% of kidney function left. This is allowing her to finally return to school (where she’s an honor student) and attempt some type of normalcy.

At this time, dialysis is the ONLY option Jadan has until she can receive a kidney transplant; her only hope. This kidney transplant will allow Jadan to do the things she loves doing, especially during the summer months. Jadan enjoyed traveling summers to Mississippi to visit her grandparents and extended family.  She enjoys playing softball with her best friend and other teammates.  And this past summer for her 16th birthday, she and her older sister, Ashley, journeyed to California to tour the entire state!  Just the ‘normal’ teenage activities that once sparked happiness and enjoyment – now simply craved.

We have been working with UVA Medical Center and our local Pediatric Nephrologist Center towards getting Jadan a new kidney from either a live or deceased donor.

HERE’S WHERE YOU CAN HELP!

The UVA transplant team is ready to start screening live donor applications through their online website: www.uvahealth.com/livingdonor. Or, if you’d like, you can contact the UVA Donor Center at (434) [phone redacted].  If donating is something that you are physically unable to do, we truly appreciate any and all positive vibes, sincere and righteous prayers, spreading the word for not just Jadan but others - not just in our community but nationwide.

We have two beautiful kidneys that God has blessed us with, not realizing that only one is truly needed to sustain us. We ask that you strongly consider being screened for donation – you can truly save someone’s life!

Thank you for your time and attention. We truly are appreciative of your support and continuous prayers during this time.
