Jacob & Tierne Lucas

Sweet Vincent was born on April 7, 2022, with a grade 4 intraventricular hemorrhage along with extreme respiratory failure. These two things were talked about a lot along with so many questions about his size. Vincent was less than a month old when he underwent his first surgery for his brain bleed. He came to life after that surgery, you could just tell he was pain free and very shortly after was switched to a cannula. Every doctor that was there in those first 72 hours said he’s a miracle every time they visited. Now for the next hurtle they wanted to jump, his size! Jacob, Tierne and Vincent had blood taken to see if there were any genetic disorders he could have, and it took what felt like forever for these results to come back, they talked to a genetics specialist for at least 3 months before finding out that Vincent in fact, did not have a genetic disorder, but he did have a special difference than us. He had PROS which stands for PIK3CA Related Overgrowth Spectum/Syndrome, and with that can come an array of things but generally it made him bigger than most. Then came the “wait til he’s a little bigger” approach where they waited until his lungs matured. When his lungs finally looked good Tierne & Jacob were thinking they might be able to take him home… but with so many failed attempts of removing some type of cpap they looked again at his airway. That’s when they were told he had tracheomalacia which basically meant that when he took a breath in, he couldn’t let it back out because his airway would close up completely. (Which led to a LOT of scary times especially with a little bit of a stubborn boy who holds his breath when he’s mad.) So after way too many scares he got his tracheostomy along with a g-tube and that was exactly what he needed! He was pretty much immediately off of oxygen once he got the trach. Vincent finally was able to live at home after spending the first seven months in the hospital. Vincent was the happiest little man, so full of love and light. To be in his presence brought our hearts so much love, so much joy, so much inspiration, so much light in all the darkness. Someone so little showed us all what true strength looked like. He was a fighter from day one overcoming the odds and medical hurdles. On Wednesday, June 28th Vincent had a seizure, he became extremely lethargic and non-responsive, Jacob and Tierne rushed him to Vanderbilt where he was examined, a CT was performed, the medical team told us that his shunt appeared to have a blockage and prepared him for an emergency brain surgery. They told us the surgery would take an hour to an hour and a half depending on where the blockage was located. Forty-two minutes later the surgery was done, they called us up for consultation telling us that the blockage was at his brain, they replaced the portion of the shunt that was blocked and removed the fluid that had leaked around it. They told us the the surgery went very well and with this type of procedure most go home after twenty-four hours, ultimately it would depend on Vincent, but they assured us they were very confident in his recovery. Vincent was sent to PICU for monitoring, we knew something was not right after seeing him because he was not waking up and responding like he had after all his other procedures, later that night the medical staff had to perform an emergency CT because Vincent was unresponsive, they said the CT looked fine but were going to perform an EEG to monitor his brain wave activity. The EEG show very little brain activity, they then performed a MRI, which confirmed that Vincent endured severe brain injury from the pressure the fluid had placed on his brain. Vincent left this world on Thursday, June 29th in the arms of his mom and dad and surrounded by loved ones. Our hearts are heavy and our worlds broken. Jacob lost his job a week prior because he left to rush home to care for his son who was having a bad seizure, so we are reaching out to request help to cover the costs of our sweet angel Vincent's memorial/funeral services. If you are unable to donate I ask that you please at least share this post. This family needs to be lifted up in prayers and wrapped in love. Sweet Vincent you took a chunk of our hearts with you when you left this world, you gave us a lifetime if love in your short time here, taught us what true strength and courage looks like. You are forever in ours and on our minds and we will carry you with always! Fly high sweet baby, we will see you again someday, until then sweet boy this not goodbye, but we will see later and until then we will meet you in our dreams!
