Jacob, Emily & Baby Unruh

Jacob & Emily will be flying to Toronto for 3 weeks, leaving May 27, to have a high risk spina bifida surgery done on Baby Unruh in utero.

At around 18 weeks pregnant, Emily’s blood test came back showing factors that Emily would need further testing for baby.

Jacob & Emily saw a specialist in Winnipeg who then diagnosed their unborn baby with severe spina bifida (a birth defect in which the baby’s spine does not fully close and is not protected by the membrane; in this case affecting the baby’s lower body).

The doctors have said it’s a high chance that Baby Unruh will never walk.

Since the initial diagnosis, Emily has gone through multiple tests and is now, finally able to get fetal surgery to help reduce the possible complications for baby.

This surgery is done out of province (in Toronto) and is a major surgery which will make her pregnancy high risk going forward.

Jacob & Emily need our help. They’ll be away from their 1 year old son for over 3 weeks, to fly to Toronto and have the procedure.

Then, Baby Unruh will need to be born around 5 weeks preterm, because of the high risk factors of the situation.

During this time, they will not have any income since Jacob wil be supporting Emily through this & there is no form of financial aid for families going through this.

A few of the costs incurred on top of their regular household expenses will be 3 weeks of accommodation, food, flights, and other extras.
