Jackson's Fight!

Donation protected
Our 7-year-old nephew, Jackson Bauer, is in the fight of his life at Banner Health - University Medical Center in Tucson. After a month of medical tests, high fevers, and severe illness, we have learned that Jackson is fighting Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) with a rare side effect called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocystosis (HLH). This occurs in approximately 1 in 100,000 children per year, in which the immune system no longer works properly.  As a result, too many activated immune cells build up and damage parts of the body, such as the liver, spleen, bone marrow and brain.

For Jackson, the first step is to treat the underlying viral infection while simultaneously suppressing his overactive immune system with a combination of steroids and chemotherapy.  This treatment is necessary, but because it is targeting his immune system, it temporarily places him at very high risk of severe infections during treatment. Without treatment, HLH can lead to severe organ damage and death.

Sarah & Marc (Mom & Dad) are rotating shifts in the hospital, while the other works or tends to the other boys. As you can imagine, we are all scared, worried, overwhelmed, confused, and besides ourselves.

With the COVID-19 pandemic occurring simultaneously, the timing for this illness is devastating. Much of his treatment is in isolation with no visitors, including his brothers, and rigorous cleaning procedures to minimize secondary infections.

The drastic change in economy, has also taken its toll on Jackson’s parents. His father, Marc, is a manager at the new Donut Bar, that just opened in downtown, Tucson. With the new “shelter in place” rules, Marc is working as many hours as he can, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, managing the business’ take out services. With the sensitive balance of trying to minimize expenses and get this new business off the ground, it is backbreaking. Meanwhile, trying to avoid the virus himself, so he can return to the hospital.

On top of the items listed above, the cost for the chemotherapy treatment that Jackson is undergoing is astronomical! It will easily be tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills by the time this is completed. Between the minimum work hours for his parents, and the extraordinary price tag for his treatment, the Bauer’s can really use some support emotionally and financially.

During these unprecedented times, where everyone needs help, we ask that you consider helping - Any and all amounts are greatly appreciated. This will assist the family in paying for Jackson's treatment, monthly bills, and additional assistance for the other boys as they start homeschooling. Your prayers, positive thoughts, and any creative offerings (e.g. cards, jokes, etc.) to keep Jackson strong are welcomed.

Thank you so much for your consideration. We will continue to provide updates on Jackson’s fight.

A little bit about Jackson: Jackson is 7 years old and is in 1st grade at Soleng Tom Elementary School. He enjoys karate, flag football, swimming, and the never-ending wrestling with his brothers (Keaton-17, Jordan-9, Brady-5). He is extremely thoughtful and loves dogs. When he grows up, he wants to be a Navy Seal.
