Hi, my name is Jack and I'm fundraising for PSC Support.
PSC is a disease which I have knowingly lived with since February 2024, yet we will never know the date I first developed it. Through shear luck it was found, as to the naked eye, it went completely asymptomatic. What we thought was a simple and harmless allergic reaction in October 2023 turned into hospital visits and scans, within days being referred to the paediatric oncology ward of the Royal Victoria Infirmary within days due to fears of cancer, before I eventually made it into the right hands of hepatology in February 2024.
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a rare disease that affects the bile ducts and liver, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body over time, scarring the bile ducts and causing them to narrow. This can lead to liver failure and multiple types of cancers, as well as ulcerative colitis which damages the bowel.
Only 7 in every 100,000 people in the UK have this disease, making it fairly rare and unheard of to most people.
PSC shows no indicator of when it will worsen, and can suddenly cause major complications within weeks. PSC Support UK is the only British charity actively researching to find a cure for the disease. Their 'Mission 2030' campaign has the aim to cure all patients of the disease within the next 5 years. And with this in mind, I have taken it upon myself to run the North Tyneside 10k this upcoming Easter, in order to raise money and awareness for the cause. However I cannot do this alone. With your help and generosity, supported by donations and fundraising activities, this will all be possible. Any effort made to support would go towards a great cause which would not only save my life, but the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of others nationally.
Dr Palak Triveldi of the University of Birmingham stated that 'Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis represents the greatest unmet need in liver medicine'
Now after first being discovered in the 1850's, I hope you will all agree that it has been around long enough. So please donate now to support my 'Race to Erase PSC' once and for all.
